Veteran Vernal Businessman Dies Suddenly
Charles Smith Carter a 61 year old Vernal businessman died suddenly Tuesday afternoon from a heart attack. He was found at home by Dr J I Hansen after feeling unwell while phoning for help. Active in church civic and business circles he served in multiple local leadership roles and was a longtime Vernal Lions officer. Born in Salt Lake City in 1880 he moved to Ashley Valley in 1887 and later worked in sheep farming and mercantile ventures including the Ashley Coop. He also directed district scout activities and remained committed to the Vernal community until his death.

City Trucks Haul 180 Loads During Clean Up
Mayor Stringham and the city council praise efforts to aid property owners during the cleanup drive by the Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce. Since April 18 city trucks have hauled about 180 loads of garbage and cinders to improve appearance while storms hindered volunteer firemen on main streets. Utah Power & Light officials discussed street light wiring delays until materials are available after the emergency. Slot machines and paging devices were ordered out of Vernal City businesses and any remaining in operation will be confiscated.

Maeser youth David B Rall, son of Mark M Hall, graduated from Victorville Army Flying School in California Friday April 24. He received his wings and a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps. He entered the flying school in Ontario last October, later moving to Victorville for rapid advancement, and will go into six months of bombardier pilot training. He visited Provo over the weekend, meeting his father and siblings before returning to Victorville to resume training.

Insect Control Crew Resumes Work Near Utah Wyoming Line
The Ashley National Forest insect control crew, last active last fall, resumes operations on the East York of Smiths Fork about one mile south of the Utah Wyoming line. To date 649 trees are designated for treatment by spotters, with snow depth of about two feet and recent storms adding ten inches. The crew notes most work requires snow shoes.

The Green River Development Group meets to adopt tentative articles of incorporation for the Utah Colorado River Conservancy Association. A 22 member board of directors is elected including O. Sugar Ration Starts Tuesday and Registration Extended
The rationing board announces a final registration day by Vernal and Uintah County for those without ration cards. On Thursday May 7th, 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., residents may apply at the nearest elementary school. After May 7 cards must be obtained from the local board.
