Utah Legion Convention to Be Held Here in Vernal

The Utah American Legion plans its annual convention in Vernal August 6 and 7. The Uintah Basin meeting marks the first time the state event is held in the basin with streamlined programming and a one and a half day schedule. District and auxiliary officers from Utah will participate, with memorial services and a banquet to close.

The notice lists service members entering Navy and Air Force training and assignments. Adolph Kolb of Vernal Utah begins a sixteen week Gunner’s Mate course at the U S Naval Training Station Farragut Idaho. Lawrence Bascom and Kimball Havens of Vernal Utah start training at Farragut. Private First Class Wilford Rogers Field reports to the Air Depot Training Station at Gila Ayr. Cowan, previously from Salt Lake, moves to teletype repair duties with Signal Company after enlisting in the Army Air Force on May 1962.

Vernal Dentist Receives OCD Certificate For Civic Service

Dr Stevens longtime emergency medical chief in Uintah County received the first officin OCD certificate armband and insignia during a Uintah Basin Defense Council meeting. He organized and directed scrap salvage efforts and emergency readiness for national defense. The award was presented by Mrs Johnsters fed Cross chair and vice chair. Continued on page Fight.

Health Day Set for May 7 in District Schools

Health Day will be held in all district schools on Friday May 7 according to Superintendent Grant West. West states a program will be held in each school though full district participation is not required to conserve resources. Alterra will feature a program in the morning with a track meet and a band concert in the afternoon.

Lions Clear Canyon Park Area for Parking and Bridge Prep

About 35 Vernal Lions Club members cleared Canyon Park for a parking area toward Ashley Canyon. They set fence posts, prepared logs for a Dry Fork bridge, stockpiled firewood, and used a wrecker to remove trees and stumps. A luncheon followed, as Lions conduct club business and elect officers for May 12.

Bond Drive Aids See Goal Passed

Treasury officials reported the bond drive near its final week with strong momentum. Subscriptions reached about 12.2 million to date and donations were coming in at a high rate as the drive aimed for a 2 billion dollar goal.

Calder Released at Stake Conference After Twelve Years

H B Calder released from stake presidency at Sunday afternoon stake conference. Archie Johnson first counselor and Bryan Goodrich second counselor named in new arrangement. Jesse A Haws becomes state clerk with HH West stepping down. Conference opened at 10 am with 675 present as leaders and choir members spoke and sung, including Donald Lambert Vene Collett Charles McConkie and Ashur Muskley.

Uintah Basin Legion Posts Meet at Roosevelt

A Roosevelt Legion hall gathering included all Uintah Basin posts and Anz Auxiliary units. Speakers announced the state convention set for August 6 and 7 in Vernal. Attendees from Vernal and nearby areas filled the room for the supper and program.

Carbon North Emery Take Track Honors

Carbon and North Emery led a regional track meet at Abterra st Friday with standout performances. Monk boosted the team, Tintah claimed pole vault, Uintah placed fourth in the tie relay, and Cleo Bascom Weston Caldwell Dale Haws formed their relay squad. Coach Tea noted no Health Day meet is planned though a junior high track event may occur before school ends.

Murder Case At Salt Lake Goes to Jury

In U S District Court at Salt Lake a murder trial centers on James Joseph Reed and Roy Ritchey for the October 12 hammer killing of Mia Abitile Agnes Williams in the Uintah Ouray Reservation near Fort Duchesne. The defense argues Reed is epileptic and easily influenced while Ritchey allegedly dealt the fatal blows. Reed claims he slept in the back seat and Ritchey handed the hammer, threatening with a revolver as a toy pistol was later found in the victim’s car.

Seminary Class Graduates Sunday Night

Seminary students are awarded diplomas at the Uintah Stake Tabernacle in a Sunday night ceremony before about 750 attendees. Principal Kimball presided, Hyrum Calder presented diplomas, and seven prepared talks plus musical selections highlighted the event with participants listed.

Navy musician in Alaska praises local Red Cross

A Navy musician stationed in Kodiak Alaska sends appreciation to Uintah County Red Cross leaders and Vernal and Roosevelt chapter students. He credits junior and high school boards with crafting plywood writing boards and gifts for service members, noting Red Cross sweaters and mittens funded by the war drive and urging comment to Duane W Holmes and his classmates.

Son of Vernal Couple Reports Son a Prisoner in Japan

Mr and Mrs Ray Eldridge of Stockum California received telegrams from the Adjutant General dated April listing their son Pie Willan Eldridge a prisoner of war in the Japanese camp in the Philippines. He was reported missing in action after the fall of Corregidor last spring. The family had last heard from him in November 1941 from a Manila hospital.

Basin Stock Show Plans Announced For May 16

United Basin Junior Livestock show officials led by Alvin I Weeks announce Basin stock show set for May 16 at the farm grounds. Show will feature about sixty eight exhibits including sheep cattle hogs poultry and horses with increased premiums. The event aims to aid breeders and feeders by displaying animals and fostering market cooperation and public appreciation of fine livestock. A horse pulling contest under a dynamometer is highlighted as a main feature.

Central School Stages Successful Comic Operetta

Central School presented a three act comic operetta directed by Mrs Pearl Sniyder featuring Uintah High pupil Tom Sawyer portrayed by Bisoe Woolley and Muriel Finn by Del Marr Sostan. LaDonna Jacobsen Aunt Polly Nancy Colton Mary, Donna Bennion, eye Montgomery. Cast includes Becky Tha and Amy Lawrence, with period dances and graveyard scene.

Twenty six year old local ewe yields wool record

Charles Batty reports a twenty six year old ewe in good health shedding nineteen pounds of wool last spring and fifteen pounds this year. He says the sheep was nine when acquired and has been with him for seventeen years.

Orchestra To Present Concert Friday Night

The COS orchestra presents its Annie spring concert Friday evening at the COS Auditorium under Professor John Aomanson. The program includes The Garden of Dreams Intermezzo Barcarolle Tales of Hoffmann selections and Tosca aria.
