Conviction in Death Count for Ritchey and Reed
Ritchey, 24 of Gowrie Town, found guilty of first degree murder with leniency recommendation in the slaying of 48 year old LeRoy Edward Ritchey of California. Reed, 26 of Oklahoma City, convicted without leniency in the same case. The killing occurred October 12 near the Uintah Ouray Indian Reservation and Fort Duchesne on U S Highway 40 after Williams gave them a ride. Jury returned four verdict options including first degree murder with and without capital punishment, or second degree murder. Continued on page five.

Mrs Hepzibah Hodgkinson to Be 89 Friday
Mrs Hepzibah Hodgkinson born May 7 1864 in Chalford Hill Gloucestershire England. She immigrated to the United States in 1874 with a group of Methodist converts and later married William Hodgkinson in Liverpool. The couple settled in Pleasant Grove and then Ashley Valley Naples where she served as a counselor in the Naples Deonanard and interacted with Brigham Young.

Fire Damages East Vernal Residence and Mill Blaze
A Saturday fire near East Vernal caused about 1500 in damages at the Joe Luck home owned by Al Hatch after an overheated stove. The house and furnishings were destroyed while the Vernal Mill fire also caused similar damage from a faulty fuse igniting dry grass. Both incidents left residents away and the fire apparatus unavailable.

County Board Proposes Full Time Health Unit Plan Uintah Uintah Basin
Saluntay Dr J M Points of the State Board of Health proposed a full time health unit in Uintah and Duchene counties to the Dinlah County Commissioners at their regular monthly meeting. Dr Points explained the program and said five part time county physicians cannot provide the best program. He said Uintah County would receive state aid if they adopt a full program, else no financial assistance. Commissioners will draft a detailed plan with the school board to serve the Uintah Basin while Dr Points was accompanied by Dr J W Stevens, Mr Ruth Haslem, and H Grant West. The school board representatives asked for tax levy changes for 1943 totaling 138 mills for maintenance and 28 mills for debt service for school buses. Francis Feiten inquired about county road equipment. The commissioners approved the bulldozer bill with an outline.

Local Red Cross Awarded National Certificate in Uintah
At a monthly Red Cross meeting in Uintah State Bank Mrs Tenney Johnston presented a national certificate of distinguished accomplishment for the 1947 war fund drive. Roy Showalter received a certificate for distinguished service as local war fund chairman. The Uintah County drive raised 282,422 dollars, exceeding the previous total of 240,006 by 42,606.
