Basin Reunion Set in Salt Lake City May 10

Willard A. Day announces a Uintah Basin reunion to be held at the Rainbow Ranch on Main Street in Salt Lake City May 10. The event, titled Waltz Night, invites basin residents and former residents to attend and meet old friends with seating for those who do not wish to dance. Michigan City collector brings 860 children's books to Vernal

Mrs. Ruth Tooze arrived with an exhibit of 860 children's books in Vernal. Special stories for ages from nursery to junior high were read at the Vernal theatre. Lectures follow Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Fort Duchesne Woman's Club and Friday at 8 p.m. at Central School. Books will be displayed at Central School and offered for sale to interested readers.

Heart Specialist to Address Vernal Kiwanis Club

Dr. A. S. Cameron head of the Heartometer Co. of Chicago will speak to the Vernal Kiwanis club Thursday at 7 30 p m in Hotel Vernal. The visit caps a four month lecture tour ending in Denver Sunday. He is a renowned heart research specialist and former instructor at the University of Minnesota medical school.

Associated Civics Clubs to Meet Here

Regular meeting of the Associated Civics Clubs of Southern and Eastern Utah will be held Saturday with David Whittenberg, chairman of the state road commission, and Ames K Bagley of the Utah Manufacturers Assn to speak. Gov J Bracken Lee and Gus P Backman are invited. A public meeting at Utah Field House of Natural History at 2 p.m. will follow. MIA Speech Festival Promises Uintah Basin Unity

The Uintah LDS stake MIA festival set for May 3 at 8 p m in Uintah high school auditorium will feature the theme The Gathering of Many Nations with stories of conversion from five Uintah residents and sketches about their ancestors. The program includes dances songs and readers with a Dutch German Norwegian and Scottish cultural mix. Beginning July 10 a special Uintah Basin forecast will be produced at Salt Lake City airport and sent to Vernal via Challenger Air Lines to aid farmers and ranchers.

Services Honor Former Express Writer

Funeral services for Frank P. Wellman 75 former Vernal Express writer were held today at 2 pm in Jensen ward chapel by Moroni Moon. Military rites were given by Witbeck Post No 11 American Legion burial was in Jensen cemetery. Wellman a former Oregon Uintah Basin teacher turned writer died Saturday in a Salt Lake hospital. He was born April 13 1873 in Pueblo Colorado married Golda Williams in 1902 later wed Zilpha Wall in 1917 both wives preceding him. He served in the Spanish American War and wrote for the Vernal Express and later feature stories for Deseret News and others.

Trailways Opens New Salt Lake City Terminal Near Temple Square

Continental Trailways unveils its modern Salt Lake City terminal at I. W. South Temple Street, with a 11:30 a.m. ceremony on Saturday April 30. Vernal plans progress on a $350 000 county hospital with a July 15 readiness target. Vernal Businessmen Organize Local Baseball Club

Vernal businessmen form a new baseball club at an April 20 meeting at the American Legion hall with M. E. Staley elected president and D. Barr as vice president. Orlan L. Johnson becomes secretary treasurer and Tassamer named team manager. The club plans new uniforms, holds practices at Jaycee softball park, and schedules games with area teams while building plans for an unlighted high school baseball park.

Memorials and Survivors in Basin Community

The obituary notes Mr. Wellman who died in January and was remembered by Basin residents. He donated an afghan crocheted in 160 hours to aid the county hospital auxiliary. Surviving relatives include six sons, two daughters, numerous grandchildren, and several siblings living in states such as Washington California and Nebraska.

Calder Creamery Fire Causes Boiler Room Damage

A fire at Calder Creamery Tuesday midnight confined to a boiler room behind the main building. Vernal volunteer firemen reported the incident Wednesday. The concrete structure remained standing but the roof three electric motors and wiring were destroyed.

Wells Boost Ash Valley Production In Uintah Basin

Two more producing wells were brought on at the Ashley Valley structures nine miles east of here to raise the field total. Cram Griffith Thomas Hall No 3 came in Tuesday around 2 p.m. and was spudded March 22. Hollandsworth and Travis reported Government No 1 well at 4237 feet producing 30 barrels daily. Kerr McGee and others continued spudding and testing wells as drilling advances in the Uintah Basin area.

Elk Springs Drilling Plans Announced In Colorado Utah

Cyclist Injured In Bike Auto Collision Near Vernal

Alan Hatch junior at Uintah High School was injured last Thursday when his motor bike collided with a car driven by C R Jeffries Vernal fire chief assistant. He was treated at a doctor’s office then at home and remained in bed Tuesday. Firemen reported a grass fire with no damage.

Progress Noted On Stake Center Construction

Progress on the Vernal Third Ward chapel and stake center accelerated this week. The First Presidency and Elders cleaned the recreational hall, hauled hardwood flooring to the upper story, and night shifts laid floors as plastering proceeds. The hall is expected to be finished with the first coat by the weekend and upper-wing floors near completion. Leaders are urged to coordinate with the Glean construction foreman for additional help this week.
