Wahlquist District Attorney of Wasatch Dies at 66

Charles J. Wahlquist, longtime Fourth Judicial district attorney, died at his Myton home from acute indigestion aged 66. Born in Sweden, he moved to Utah at age 11, taught in Wasatch schools, served as county attorney, county recorder, and juvenile judge. Survived by wife Elizabeth and six children, funeral held in Myton with wide attendance.

Per Capita School Costs Compare With State Averages

The Uintah district reports 1921-22 per capita expenditures far below state averages. Total cost per child is 45.63 versus 79.94 statewide, with Uintah also under in furniture, buildings, administration, and operating costs. Daggett and Grand counties show higher figures and Uintah lacks a county high school building.

John Glenn, Early Pioneer Laid To Rest

John Glenn a pioneer of Vernal and the Ash ley valley died last week near his Whita river farm when struck by a falling limb while in bed. Born December 1 1859 in Marti Utah he lived a full life of teaching business surveying irrigation and land ventures. Survived by his wife Olive Haws and five daughters his memory is described as keen honest and widely respected.

County club drives to recruit 200 members countywide

The Commercial club launches a countywide membership drive aiming for 200 new members with early progress of 20 from nearly every community. A. B. Thomas will become secretary around May 15. A monthly bulletin will discuss local and county issues and guide youth athletic programs. The recreation room is temporarily closed while access expands to all members under supervision.

The Ashton Bros. store expands by adding a west store room formerly Winn barber shop to house a modern grocer and dry goods department. Mrs. E. J. Young Jr. and Miss Reva York head women’s wear while E. D. Lemmon runs men’s wear. Howard L. Woolley and W. S. Stringham oversee groceries. Manager W. S. Ashton notes 31 years in Mercantile business since 1892.

Urgent Uintah school board meeting set for next Monday aims to push a senior high school building this year. A strong delegation and letters to board leaders are urged to show broad district support for immediate action to prevent progress setbacks and fund a new high school.

Clean Up Campaign Committee Meeting Planned

Chairman Pontha Calder presided over a lively gathering of the Clean Up committee with speakers including Congressman Don B. Golton and Wallace Calder. Dr. O'Donnell urged citywide cooperation to clean fly breeding sites and maintain corral cleanliness every eight days as required. roads to Vernal should be beautified and dilapidated fences repaired. A general improvement plan with a clear aim was proposed, and two monthly post-noon sessions were suggested for town and country cleanup efforts.

Community Singing and May Day Festivities at Park Lawn

The community will gather at the park courthouse lawn for singing crowning of the May Queen and braiding of four May poles starting 5 30 p m. Mrs May Henderson directs the Queen’s crowning and the event will feature a street carnival beginning at 8 p m with a parade of the May Queen and attendants and the band.

Emerald Oil Company owners of the Rangely oil wells receive a 3 cent per share dividend at the regular monthly meeting. This marks the second dividend payout of the year.

Preliminary Trial Saturday Draws Crowd

A full day filled the Uintah county court as the preliminary hearing on the Thomas E. Caldwell case proceeded. The charge is larceny of 104 sheep from Horace Coltharp’s Atwood place, with suspects including Thomas E Caldwell and others. Justice N J Hansen presided. District Attorney Wahlquist assisted in the first such preliminary hearing. The state’s witnesses and defense counsel presented a detailed case before the judge released the defendant. a new arrest was pledged on the same charges.

Downey Returns From Salt Lake City Mission Board Trip

Rev G A Downey returned Wednesday morning from Salt Lake City by stage after attending a missionary board meeting regarding Willcox Academy. He reports Willcox Academy will operate as usual for another year. En route Tuesday 32 passengers reached the basin as far as Myton with 6 left at Price due to extreme road conditions the stage reached Roosevelt.

Farm Bureau Executes 16000 Pound Hog Shipment

The Farm Bureau under E. D. Smith shipped 16 000 pounds of hogs by four trucks to Watson and Ogden Utah. Two loads traveled by Uintah Railway along with one by A A Hatch and one by E A Manker. A planned beer shipment of nine loads did not occur.

Fifty Men Employed At Camp Collett

R. 8. Collett, after being in Vernal for a week, left Thursday morning for Camp Collett in the off shale field. There he has 560 men employed doing assessment work, principally from Vernal and Roosevelt, all from the SBagin. They will be through by July 1. All this money Tem gains at home.

Women’s Branch of Farm Bureau Forms in Uintah County

The Women's Branch of the Farm Bureau in Uintah County is organized with officers including Elizabeth Manker as president and Sarah Rudge as vice president. Forty three members join as the group plans demonstrations by Miss Lillian Elder on home management, sewing, and nutrition and prepares clubs for girls at Vernal Junior High School and other local schools. Meetings are set for the first Tuesday monthly with May 8 to include a dress stove demonstration, while the group aims for broad enrollment and community work.
