State Wildlife convention opens in Vernal this weekend

The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a 12.79 million dollar construction contract for Tyzack Dam on Big Brush Creek ten miles northeast of Vernal. Brown & Root Western of Denver won the bid among 19 bidders. The earthfill dam will be about a third of a mile long and 130 feet high with a spillway, outlet works, aqueduct, roads and recreation facilities. Completion is slated for 1980, serving Vernal's water needs and local irrigation, with 22 600 acre feet of water planned for municipal, industrial and agricultural use and fishing recreation at Ashley Valley.

Texas American Oil Company says its No. 1 Some Federal Well in the Uintah Basin is producing 1.44 million cubic feet of natural gas daily and three barrels per day of crude oil from depths of 7,760 to 9,433 feet in the Mesa Verde Formation. Free National Guard Clinic Offers Free Medical Tests
The 133th Evacuation Hospital of the Utah National Guard will sponsor a free medical clinic at the Vernal National Guard Armory Saturday from 1 pm. Jointly sponsored by the Vernal unit and Uintah County EMT Association, it offers heart attack prevention, vision and hearing checks, diabetes screening, first aid tips, and blood pressure tests. Tests are free to anyone, with referrals to doctors if issues are found. The unit plans its next clinic in St George.

Ross Snow of Jensen has been named Rancher of the Year by the Uintah Basin Soil Conservation District. He operates a 180 acre irrigated ranch with 244 acres wet meadow near Green River and 1000 acres rangeland plus 3000 acres of Blue Mountain lands. He improved production through water management, brush control, rotation grazing, fencing, and water developments. He is state Brand Inspector for Uintah County and has long service on local ag boards. He and Vera Harrison, married in 1935, raised a family of six, with two sons now full and part time on the ranch.
