Accidental Shooting Frightens Albert Marrs at Home

Glines correspondent reports an accidental shooting at the Harris residence. Albert Marrs, an ex soldier, was wounded in the breast when his sister Lovia removed his loaded revolver. A doctor treated him. he is improving and will be moved for X ray to locate the bullet.

Utah Federal Buildings May Be Advertised Soon

Senator W H King announced that the treasury secretary ordered the supervising architect to publish plans at Spanish Fork and Eureka Utah, with prompt contracts if satisfactory bids come in. Vernal building funding may be insufficient, but local brick and Utah builders could secure a fair price. a special agent will visit Vernal to assess materials and labor before further steps.

Schools to Have New Books The Coming Year

A state committee from the school text book commission led by Dr C N Jensen Milton Bennion and Miss Matilda Peterson is shaping a plan to score and assess textbooks for public schools next year The geography adopted will include a supplement on Utah and the history will be updated to the present time.

Dr James L Gibson Goes to Europe on Leave

Dr James L Gibson dean of the University of Utah School of Arts and Sciences begins a year long leave of absence granted by the board of regents. He is son of Mr and Mrs William Gibson of Ashley Valley and will travel directly to France and then Belgium, departing from New York on May 2.

Judge J B Roark Passes Away in Vernal

Judge J B Roark died Tuesday at 2 PM from bladder inflammation after a long illness. Born in Ireland, he moved to America at 22, lived in Wisconsin, served as police judge, and worked as a land attorney in Oklahoma before Vernal. Funeral at St Pauls Episcopal with Rev Hersey. pallbearers included McConnell, Brian, Meagher, Reynolds, Glenn, and McKee. Burial at Vernal cemetery attended by pallbearers and Rev Hersey.

Council awards contracts for sprinkling and bridges

The city council rejected funding for Vernal band summer concerts of 150 dollars, pledging personal support instead. Nine bidders vied for sprinkling and garbage hauling. John H. Carless won at 4 dollars per eight hour day and 3 dollars weekly for garbage hauling. The Hadleci’s bridge over the gul d was awarded to County Commissioner Fred Feltch for 135 dollars, the only bid.

Grand Lodge officers installed as Downey and Johnston attend Provo

Rev G A Downey and Thos T Johnston attend the Grand Lodge encampment in Provo as delegates from Vernal Lodge No 24. State officers were installed. A gloom fell over delegates upon learning Grand Master L W Curry had died. Deputy Grand Master Parley N Davis of Salt Lake City is expected to be chosen to fill the vacancy.

Mother's Sister Finds Homes for Shaw Children

Orphaned by the Shaw tragedy in Price the three Shaw children William eleven Hilda seven and Gertrude seven found good homes. Mrs E A Jeffers Shaw's assister in Scottsbluff Nebraska arranged support while a Shaw sister in Calwn California with her husband welcomed the youngsters. They received tickets and funds for the trip and headed to California last week. During her Price visit Mrs Shaw made many friends though Shaw left little favorable impression.

Highly Honored Citizen L L W Curry Passes On

At 4 26 Monday morning April 17 1922 there passed from the life of L L W Curry a highly respected Utah citizen. He was a friend to Indians a banker a leader in Ashley valley and Uintah county service. Known for integrity courage and wit his death ends a long public career including state representative and Red Cross leadership. His funeral arrangements reflected his community ties with I O O F B P O E and the Vernal Commercial Club. He is survived by his widow son David L and brother Matt W of Ouray.

State decision on land assesssments in Uintah lands

The Utah state position on taxing equities held by prospective purchasers of Indian lands within Uintah and surrounding areas garners support from two attorney general opinions, while Indian agent Albert H Kneale disputes the view, claiming regulations prohibit such taxation. The mayor and civic improvement committee urge resuming and extending Clean-up Week activities after Creek Dayg and bad weather slowed progress. Much has been done but much remains. plans include beautifying streets with durable improvements, planting trees and shrubs, and sustaining efforts in coming years.

L R Whitted superintendent of construction for government buildings arrived in Vernal from Santa Fe New Mexico where he oversaw a federal building nearing completion He toured local materials and costs with Postmaster E J Young Jr noting the ground floor is too small for 500 lock boxes and extra parcel post space He left for Eureka and Salt Lake City after a delayed arrival from Watson due to muddy roads

Death calls pioneer of Jensen Utah

Jensen correspondent reports the death of Rachel M Billings on April 8 after pneumonia complications. Born July 7 1871 in Wanship Summit County Utah she moved to Jensen at age seven and married Warren F Billings on December 26 1887. Survived by husband four children three brothers five sisters services held April 11 with Jensen Relief Society leadership and ward choir performing. Burial at Jen Ben cemetery.
