Vernal boosters fill U A rally despite rain as 750 attend to back a junior college. Speakers include alumnus George A Slaugh and Uintah academy leaders stressing Uintah College growth and the need for a junior college option.
Ver nal Bennion died suddenly at home from heart complications after a brief illness during a carnival period in Ashley valley. A respected businessman and foresighted community figure, Bennion guided irrigation talks with Governor Mabey and Hoover, balancing loyalty, kindness, and practical knowledge in livestock and local prosperity.
A Utah born leader and banker Enos Bennion, longtime Vernal figure, served two Utah Legislature terms and chaired the appropriation committee. He held multiple local posts, including president of Vernal Irrigation Co and Uintah State Bank, and led Ash ley Co op, Uintah Abstract, and other Vernal institutions. He died leaving a legacy in Uintah Basin politics and business.
Vernal city hosts its inaugural spring carnival attracting large crowds. Organizers report strong participation across games, rides, and parade events with steady foot traffic and positive community response throughout the weekend.
A large crowd filled Vernal for the carnival and spring festival Monday as the town glowed with yard and window decorations. The Vernal band provided festive music while contests featured the Ulitsh academy squad and local competitors in tennis, running, and walking events. The Uintah academy hosted rapid-fire results, and a baseball game ended 9 to 6 with a disputed umpire’s calls cited as the day’s weak point.
The Moffat tunnel bill passed Colorado's legislature by a large margin, 28 to 2 in the senate and 48 to in the house, with Pueblo Flood bill also approved. Signed by Lt Gov Cooley and Speaker Davis, the measure may become law once Governor Shoup signs it. Senator Rockwell notes potential benefits for Uintah Basin Utah and western Colorado once the tunnel is built, reducing travel miles and boosting through traffic. Construction cost is capped at 6.72 million dollars borne by the district, with no state liability.
The Uintah Academy held commencement for the class of 1922 in the tabernacle with a large crowd. Adam S Bennion of Salt Lake City delivered the address. Twenty nine graduates received diplomas, the largest class yet, including Lola Smith Eva Vernon Roy Wahlquist Iras White William Pearce Harold Calder Myrtle Dudley and others. Several students held leadership roles such as student body president Amitia Girls president Toyaaak club president and class officers.
A skeleton of an unknown man was found on the west bank of Green River four miles above the Price and Green rivers junction, with skull, teeth, limbs, and a dress shoe. Estimated age thirty to forty, height about five six, likely dead one to two years. Authorities seek missing person tips via postmasters, county officials, or Mr Shinn.
Miss Nell B Preece, chief clerk of the state board of equalization for five years, resigns effective Saturday to join International Smelting Co of Salt Lake. The new post offers higher pay and greater advancement prospects. Before the state board she held county posts in Vernal.
The Priesthood and officers' meeting drew many from distant wards in ideal weather. Miss Elva Eaton played a piano solo and Prof. W IE Burgener a cello solo. Forester Harry Van Tassell gave a fire prevention talk. President Wallace Calder announced the outing dates as July 17 to 22 at Trout Lake Park.
A local contest at Ashton Hardware offered a $10 prize attracting a large crowd Monday afternoon. A window display featured toy balloons with painted letters. at five o'clock electric fans moved them and the public read the letters forming the word securities. L. A. Pack correctly placed the word first and won.
Ex mayor D Colton, after months in Lava Hot Springs Idaho seeking relief from rheumatism, is much improved and now walks on crutches. He says the pain was severe but expects to be normal soon. R Collett accompanied him to Watson on the trip, and Colton remained in fine shape.
John McAndrews and Vernal Commercial club members hosted visiting officials Prof. Olin soil expert and C F Moulton traveling freight agent for the Denver Rio Grande. They met Peppard Seed Co representatives in Roosgavelt and reviewed the Reservation Section before a Vernal club meeting on alfalfa seed. They plan a trip through Ashley valley before departure.
