Fund Hearings Loom On River Project Start

Hearings on the Upper Colorado River Project appropriation are due in Washington next week. The administration requests 12 million dollars in supplemental funds, up from 2 million, with most of the extra 4 million for Glen Canyon Dam. Reps Dawson and Dixon will testify for ground breaking funds covering initial Glen Canyon Flaming Gorge construction and related access roads and design work. Senators Watkins and Bennett will present the request in the Senate.

Access Road to Glen Canyon Dam Seen Next Month

J Carlelasen Utah Road Commission chairman says conventional passenger cars can reach Glen Canyon by early May. Mandry, returning from Phoenix, notes officials favor a permanent through highway to the site. An agreement among road commissions and federal agencies to share costs for a through route and materials transport is proposed.

Unknown Origin Fire Destroys Fred Coats Home

A fire of unknown origin Tuesday at 7 15 pm gutted the Fred Coats residence at 64 West 2nd North. The four room log house and its contents were completely burned as firefighters battled the blaze for two hours. The Coats family were at home when the fire started.

Lady Lions Host Annual Mothers and Daughters Party

The event at the stake center drew 168 attendees. Axel Holm of Heber City staged a trained dog act featuring Maggie and Mike, dogs known across the state and on television. Two dance numbers by a four and five year old group from Mrs. Maxine Conk's class closed the program.

Funeral Held for Wm H Coltharp Business Leader

Funeral services for William H Coltharp 72 prominent Ulatah Basin businessman and pioneer were held Tuesday at 10 am at St James Catholic Church. He died Saturday morning at his Hayden home after illness. Trequiem Mass was celebrated by Father Ignatius Strancar. Burial was in Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery. Coltharp was born February 26 1684 in Vernal to William Porter and Sarah Jane Merkley Coltharp and educated in Uintah Basin schools.

O Neil Hospitalized After Leg Injury in Golf Accident

C Brian O Neil is in good condition after a deep leg injury from a golf tee wedge embedded in his leg. The accident happened Saturday at 7 pm during a jog when a chip from the tee wedge flew up and struck him, requiring several hours to remove the object.

Lightning Sets Tree Ablaze Near Vernal Home

A fierce lightning flash and thunder shook Vernal on Tuesday at 2:30 pm striking a tree in Leo Calder’s yard at Fifth South and Seventh West. The bolt shattered three rooms of the Calder home, exploded a barn bulb, melted lamp sockets, and knocked out a street transformer. Calder, nearby on a tractor, believed the tractor exploded beneath him. No other damage reported.

Range Shearing Underway Near End Of Season

Alta county agents report most farm flocks sheared and range herds in progress. Uintah County census shows 88,702 sheep and lambs shorn for 829,488 pounds of wool, about ten pounds per animal. Indicates more farm flocks may shift to range flocks due to wool price incentives.

Round Table on Upper Colorado River storage plan fields questions

Parley Neeley of the U S Bureau of Reclamation will answer questions on the Upper Colorado River storage project during a 2 pm round table at Vernal Fieldhouse. New Vernal Commissioner Details Air Fish Plant Plan

Jack Turner newly appointed to the Utah Fish and Game Commission said the group aims to plant 10 million fish by air this season using a recently equipped state airplane. Ralph Preece reported state road crews will ready the Fishing Gorge access road in about 30 days. Turner, Preece, Clare Hopkins and L Siddeway flew over two routes. GreenDsle Dart Creek area or Red Springs in McKee Draw via Green Draw, with a construction camp near Dutch John flat and Forest Service backing Greendale route. Funeral Planned Thursday for Oil Field Victim

Funeral services for Joe Brooks 43 died Monday from injuries in a White Rocks oil field accident were held Thursday at 2 pm in Vernal mortuary. Burial followed at Rock Point cemetery. Brooks was crushed inside an all well pump last Friday suffering lung collapse rib injuries and later pneumonia. He died at the local hospital while inside the pump repairing a rod after a worker accident.

Extension Service to Aid Indians With Agriculture and Homemaking

Utah State Agricultural College Extension Service signs an agreement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take over extension work with Indians in the Uintah Basin. County and home demonstration agents will work with both Indians and whites to improve farming and homemaking practices. The program shifts from Vernal and Roosevelt offices to three Basin districts and a new Duchesne office. Lloyd Smith, now transferred from Cache County, becomes Duchesne county agent effective April 23. Mrs. Mable Merrell will join as home demonstration agent.

Negotiations completed for Ashley Appliance to change ownership of Echo Park Lodge with Paumi Wiley Baucum involved. Roosevelt project to direct geologist led testing program

In a planned development, at least five geologists will be indicated to drive the testing program. Several other companies are expected to move into the area soon, with MMAC leading the development efforts and evaluating the site for potential vet programs.
