Officials warn that Colorado River project legislation is a first step toward broader river development and that continued effort is essential. Buckling under opposition could derail funding and dam contracts as planners chart highway access and work toward fast track construction.
Church leaders urged stronger efforts to guard young people during the 26th General Conference. President David O McKay marked 50 years of leadership as General Authority, while speakers emphasized countering liquor and tobacco with a new Churchwide program. Church members began homeward travel from Salt Lake City after the conference with broadcasts reaching the Vernal area.
A Thursday 845 pm collision on Dinosaur park road north of Jensen caused 150 in damage. Helen Gross 22 of Vernal drove a 1949 Chev convertible being towed by Paul Murray when Joseph Murray 21 of Jensen in a 1952 Pontiac sedan failed to see the tow car and struck it damaging the Pontiac 100 and the sedan 50. No citations issued. Sgt. Sammy Hatch investigated.
Uintah High School counselor Darren McCarthy leads guidance classes with seniors visiting from multiple institutions. Frontier Airlines officials spoke on growth and training paths for pilots and station agents while two stewardesses highlighted job benefits. A 26 minute aviation history film accompanied the session.
The Uintah High School auditorium received a bright taffeta flag as a gift from Vernal's American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs Shirley Slaugh presented it during a March 28 assembly, with Principal Glenn Ovard and student body president Veley Eaton accepting. Valoy led the pledge. Mrs Eve Ashtort spoke on the flag’s history. Mrs Peggy James introduced guests. Frank Walker offered the dedicatory prayer. the Uintah High band played The Star Spangled Banner.

The former Jim's Cafe building was moved on Thursday to make room for a new modern restaurant at the west side location. A contractor is overseeing the construction of the new facility featuring booths and a counter.

President Eisenhower signed the Upper Colorado River Storage bill authorizing a 1.76 billion system of power and irrigation works in the Upper Basin. Uintah and Duchesne county projects are planned with Steinaker Reservoir first. construction could start within two years and Vernal work may begin next year. A Uintah Conservancy District would levy taxes to fund irrigation, with water treated for culinary use and power sales covering most costs.
The municipal and county pool will open May 30 with repairs underway. Security efforts include cementing broken pool bottom spots and replacing windows. City offices are accepting applications for a pool manager for the coming season.
County agent Willand Farnsworth warns that delay in spraying alfalfa could be disastrous. He advises applying four tenths of an ounce per acre of Dieldrin or Heptachlor while alfalfa is two inches high. A double application helps with cutworms and adult weevils before egg laying.
Utah health officials report week ending April 6 with 24 flu cases in Uintah County. Among them five are influenza A and 19 influenza B or undetermined. thirty percent show whooping cough symptoms in the region.
Vernal Lions Club and Utah Power and Light sponsor a 1956 Upalog Shaw boat show at Ulntshifigh school auditorium. Over 50 cast members perform male chorus dances a male quartet acrobatics a Indies fashion review and solo numbers with songs such as The Student Prince Show Boat Come to the Fair and Hawaiian War Chant. Proceeds fund Merkley Park improvements.
