Faster Malaria Cure Claim By Prison Volunteers
The Illinois Board for Coordination of Malarial Studies announced two new synthetic drugs for malaria, SN 7618 and a second experimental compound. SN 7618 reportedly cures falciparum malaria in about two days and relieves acute vivax attacks faster than atabrine or quinine, with fewer side effects. The second drug, still in early trials, aims at vivax malaria and shows promise but is not yet identified. Both arose from a wartime research program testing volunteers, including inmates at Stateville, and are not yet available to the public.
