Funeral services for Hyrum Bennion Calder 73 were held in Vernal First Ward with speakers from Uintah Basin praising his church and civic work. Born May 26 1873 in Calder Park later Nibrey Park, he and brother prompted Calder Brothers Co dairy products and early Uintah Basin business ventures. He served a Scotland LDS mission and held multiple church roles including bishop of Vernal wards and stake president. his funeral featured a large flower display and music by a male quartet.

Lt Stewart Ashton son of Mr and Mrs Rae Ashton of Vernal has been awarded the distinguished flying cross and gold star in three air medals by a commander of aircraft Philippine Sea Frontier. He was cited for January 1 1945 to April 20 1945 for many flights in combat areas with anti aircraft fire and enemy patrols. Ashton was released from active service in December and is now in active reserve. He is employed at Ashton's. He reports the flights covered Leyte in the Philippine, Morotai, and the Netherlands East Indies.

Womens Group to List Blood Donors in Uintah District
Members of the Uintah District Federated Womens club will compile a list of volunteer blood donors for emergency use at Uintah Basin Hospital. The spring project plans to type blood from 150 to 200 local residents to serve as donors. Burglars smashed the Sather Jewelry window on Vernal Street Friday night, stealing about $175 in merchandise including a watch and several rings. Rains Help Uintah Basin Crops After Mid May Storm
Uintah Basin received about three quarters of an inch of rain over ten days and a late two week storm dropping four to seven inches of snow in high country. Uintah High Earns Honorable Mention at Provo Drama Festival
Uintah High School earned an honorable mention for The Summons of Sariel at Brigham Young University’s Provo drama festival last weekend. Kathyleen Merkley also received an honorable mention for Ashes of Roses while Nola Mae Weeks earned a superior individual rating for The Old, Old Woman. Approximately 400 students from 26 Utah high schools competed. Uintah was the only school with a sound, music, and lights production and was praised for enthusiasm. Ona Harrison supervisor of the Ashley National forest spoke to the Vernal Lions club urging conservation to protect forests and soil. He warned America uses forests 20 percent faster than growth, noted 25 million tons of topsoil wash away annually, and urged public schools to promote conservation awareness. He said additional cutting could occur on the Ashley Forest, where timber growth exceeds harvest, and highlighted underused mills and supervised harvesting. A blaze at the Ashley Meat Products company at 133 West Main Street in Vernal caused about 10000 in damage when overheated smokehouse flames spread to the meat-cutting room and roof. Vernal fire department confined the fire to the center of the building and cooling meat in front and rear coolers remained intact. Proprieter Lakell Anderson said business will continue. insurance covers most losses. Fire began around 2 am Sunday, discovered by Jimmy Anderson and Eddie Brass who alerted the market manager. Immediate repairs planned.
