Morris R Cook Chosen Uintah County Clerk

Morris R Cook of Naples was sworn in as Uintah County Clerk Friday at 1:50 p.m. by county attorney Whitney D Haramond at the regular county commissioners meeting. He fills the vacancy caused by the death of Charles T Pope. The new clerk was a former mechanic at Vernal Motor Sales and serves as bishop of Naples ward. Mrs. Cook and five children. Deputy county clerk Ethel Crown remains. Lincolnzo Young opened bids for the new county building equipment. Southern Steel Co of San Antonio won at 27 547. Other bids were Stewart Iron Works 27 025 and Pauly Jail Building 33 012. A petition for a culvert to town was presented by Mel Dana Price and Mrs Dwayne Anderson.

Uintah Basin Road Construction to Cost $795000

Uintah Basin road work in a statewide program will begin within 90 days, costing $703,000 in Uintah County. The project includes a 25 mile section from Green dale Junction to Flaming Gorge set at about $250,000, with invitations planned May 17. Additional secondary system work includes a route to Dinosaur Monument costing $60,000 and a Uintah County stretch at $265,000 plus Neola to Whiterocks road at $200,000 with notices in April.

Dinosaur Land Group Raises Eight Thousand For Visitor Center

Vernal City council discussed a poisoned meat complaint and ongoing investigations while approving a 105 000 dollar preliminary street improvements plan. Bids for street signs were awarded to Atlas Equipment Co. and city leaders prepared for upcoming opening activities for the Dinosaur Quarry visitor center.

Lairy Manshall Injured in Jeep Accident

Mrs Priscilla Dingham of Myton formerly Maeser left Marcel 15 to be with her now Larry Marshall on duty at Ft Manchua Ariz. He was flown to Latterman Hospital in San Francisco with internal injuries fractures and severe burns. The jeep overturned pinning him ten feet down and he was hospitalized with serious but nonfatal injuries.

Dam Bid Call Seen in Two Weeks for Masonry Gorge

Bids on the prime contract for the Masonry Gorge Dam will be called in about two weeks and the contract awarded in June. The process is supported by Sen. Joseph O Mahoney in Washington, with preparations under Denver offices for bid forms and drawings. The contract includes the diversion tunnel and a power plant road, and requires completion of the gravel road segment within 90 days of award.

Vernal Chamber Names New President For 1958 59

At the Vernal Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday Dwight Wetenkamp was named president for the 1958 59 year. Harold Duke was chosen vice president and Alvin Kay secretary. Letters to the Republican National Committee and U S Senators urged Vernal project construction and warned of livestock industry danger from Dinosaur Monument plans. Rep Clair St. dropkina discussed Flaming Gorge access road and noted a 65 foot pier would be needed to keep the bridge above water. Road officials plan to wait for prime contracts before coordinating with the contractor.

LDS Authority To Visit Ashley Stake Sessions

Sheep Shearing Progress in Uintah Area

Uintah County agricultural agents report farm flocks nearly all shorn as shearing winds up this week after late rains and cold weather. Range flocks have begun, with some losses noted, and soil moisture at high levels promising a normal irrigation year. Range ewes are slated to begin lambing May 4. Winter wheat acreage is small due to prior winter damage.

Ten Car Pileup Near Strawberry In Snowstorm

A sudden heavy snow storm in Strawberry Valley caused a ten car pileup Friday near noon. Vernal drivers Paul Murphy of Roosevelt and Arben Jolley of Vernal were involved as cars stalled in deep snow. Jolley’s family suffered bruises. Duane Price and Fred Washburn also collided in the chain reaction.
