Fort Duchesne youth dies in phosphate truck crash

Ten year old James Goggles died Monday when a pickup he rode in collided head on with a Hatch Co phosphate truck at U S 40 near Ute Bowling Lanes. His parents were injured but released after hospital treatment. no citations were issued. The crash marks Uintah Basin’s sixth fatal vehicle accident this year per UHP.

Oil shale demo plan pitched by WASP officials

WASP officials met ERDA representatives in Washington to present a proposed commercial demonstration program testing three oil shale extraction methods on a full scale basis. The plan includes direct heated Porado DH, indirect heated Union B, and in situ methods, along with two level tunnel and pillar mining and in situ retort preparation.

Four Fires Reported In Vernal Area During Week

Vernal Volunteer Fire Department logged four fires from Thursday of last week to Tuesday. A Clifford Massey residence fire at 33 South 2nd West caused smoke damage estimated at 1000 dollars. A grass fire near the Pamco building on East Highway 40 was extinguished at 11:45 AM. A grass and brush fire along the Ashley Valley Highline canal south of the Owen Powell farm was put out at 9:10 PM. A trailer home fire at 1:10 AM Monday belonged to Kenneth Solmes at 1819 South 4500 South, with 500 dollars loss.

Tyzack dam contract award delayed with extension

The Bureau of Reclamation and Jow bidder agreed to a two week bid extension for the Tyzack Dam and Reservoir project. Brown and Root Western Inc. will see the new deadline set to April 16 to allow additional checks on specifications. Officials say award is expected this week and work may begin within 30 days.
