New York Man Applies for League Membership After Fatal Incident

Iowa Senate Passes 43 Bills in One Day

Des Moines March 19 The Iowa Senate advanced forty three bills mostly of a special character. A ten minute limit on each speaker was adopted to speed debate. In the House the Postal Telegraph memorial to Congress was defeated after strong plea by Harrison the memorial’s advocate. A motion to reconsider was to be made.

Board of Trade fights Northern Pacific freight rate change

In Minneapolis on March 19 the Board of Trade denounced a new freight schedule by the Northern Pacific Railway. It complains ships from St Paul are charged the same as New York for many ores. Officials say ocean tariffs force the practice and argue Idaho rates make Portland unable to compete with St Paul or Minneapolis.

Snow slide in Carey mine kills five miners in Conundrum Gulch

Leadville reports a disastrous snowslide at Carey in Conundrum Gulch seventy miles north of the city. Five miners died: J. F. Tate, Millard Thom, E. Steel, George Morris, and S. P. Steel. The avalanche measured several hundred feet wide and fifty feet deep.

Central Pacific considers fast mail train link

General Manager Towne of the Central Pacific Railroad said he is in correspondence about improving mail service and that it will likely lead to adding a train to connect with the fast mail from the East in San Francisco.
