Brass and Brains in a Railroading Tale

The hero is George Parker a longtime South Carolina railroad conductor known for his smartness and fiery temper. After a series of transfers he joined Brunswick road workers who ride trains without paying fares, clashed with a passenger he tried to arrest, and was discharged. He sought a job from General Wade Hampton who gave him a letter to President Hayes. Parker traveled to Washington, asked for a consul post but was offered a position at another eastern port. He returned to Augusta, secured funds with help from friends, and departed for his consulate where he repaid his salary and later married a countess.
