Farm program to succeed AAA now in effect

Washington March 2 The White House approved the New Deal soil conservation and farm relief act, a $600 million successor to the AAA. President Roosevelt said the goal is parity of farm income with three major objectives linked to national welfare. Davis announced rapid action with 30 million acres to be taken out of production for soil conservation and new conferences with agricultural leaders.

Two Named on Election Board in Van Wert County

Arthur C. Frericks a Democrat and N. W. Elder a Republican began four year terms on the Van Wert county election board by appointment of Secretary of State George 8 Myers. Frericks succeeds Martin W Feiger while Elder continues. Other continuing members are Walter Putman and M. M. Ayler.

WPA sponsored community meetings open in Van Wert county

Emergency Schools division of the Ohio Works Progress Administration sponsors weekly meetings in York township Middle Point and Convoy to discuss community agencies local government taxation and the Ohio Schools Foundation Program. Inspection Tonight for 135th Company

Members of Van Wert's National Guard unit the 135th Collecting Company polish uniforms and even door knobs at headquarters in the YMCA. Tonight the annual inspection in the armory will be conducted by Major Ross B. Brett of the 115th Medical Regiment Indianapolis after a dinner at the Hotel Marsh hosted by Capt. W. E. Beach Capt. R. H. Good and the armory board headed by William McGirr.

Warren Hotel Fire Kills Woman and Injures Man in Ohio

A woman died and a man was seriously injured when they jumped from a third floor window as a fire swept the Warren Hotel in Warren Ohio. Six others were trapped inside while firefighters battled the blaze. Two people were carried out through rear windows by firefighters as the fire, which began on the third floor, spread rapidly through the building.

Band Fathers' Comedy Show at Lincoln School Gym

Band Fathers' Association of Van Wert High School will stage a comedy boxing show next Monday night at Lincoln school gym. A rehearsal is set for Friday night with twelve events and a socco game arranged for the program.

Church Fire at St Marys Catholic Church

A fire in the boys sacristy of St Marys Catholic Church on East Central Avenue was extinguished before heavy damage. Rev Father Robert L Gallagher, pastor, moved a painting to save it. Firefighters responded, and another small roof fire at 2148 Wall Street was put out.

Wren Wins Its First Tourney Title in Lincoln Gym

Wren High School captured its first county tournament title by defeating Ridge 31 to 24 in the finals at Lincoln gym. Coach Charles Shell led Wren, while Ridge was led by coach Fred Hoffman. Both schools will enter Shawnee sectional play, joining other county winners Celina and Delphos entrants for the weekend tournament.

Detours Removed on Routes 49 and 54 After Floods

Detour signs have been removed from state routes 49 and 54 in the southwest part of the city after flooding from ice filled streams. Officials advised today that the detours were put in place during the flooding and are now rescinded.

Fear General Strike Looms Over Akron Goodyear Plants

Akron O March 2 Labor leaders threaten a general strike in a city of 225000 as the Goodyear Tire and Rubber three plants strike enters its third week. The Central Labor Union authorized by a 25 member committee would call a general walkout if the company uses force to reopen plants or if needed to win the Goodyear strike. A general strike would cripple the rubber industry and paralyze Akron, where about 60 percent rely on 15 rubber plants employing about 45000 people. United Rubber Workers locals at Firestone and Goodyear plants planned instant obedience. Seiberling General and other locals set meetings today.

League considers oil embargo penalties on Italy

Geneva delegates from 18 nations meet to decide new penalties for Italy over the Ethiopia war. A oil embargo is debated though others favor tightening sanctions while Mussolini warns the League may be abandoned and the Locarno Treaty denounced.
