Two Japanese Leaders Reappear After Revolt

Tokyo reports that Premier Keisuke Okaya and Grand Chamberlain Soroku Suzuki, previously listed as killed, are alive though injured. A rebel-led purge killed several officials, including Korekiro Takahashi and Makoto Saito, while Okada escaped. Martial law ends as Tokyo returns to normal.

Wapak Captures Mid-West Ohio League Title

Wapakakoneta Redskins clinched the league title by beating Bluffton 28 to 21 in the final game. Van Wert finished tied for second with Bluffton at five wins and three losses. Ada was unmentioned. Final standings show Wapakonda atop with 6 wins, Van Wert and Bluffton each 5–3, Saint Marys 0–8.

President Roosevelt indicated he would sign an executive order to provide 30 million dollars for crop loans, replacing the 50,080,000 crop loan bill he vetoed. The remark was made amid efforts to stabilize farm credit and support farmers during the agricultural crisis.

Steve Miller Resigns YMCA Job for Parmorts

Steve Miller resigns as physical director of the YMCA in Van Wert after nine years to join Purmort Brothers Insurance Agency and devote full time to the new position. He succeeds R W Conley who also resigns unannounced. The YM staff will cover classes until a successor is appointed, likely after September, with March 10 meeting set to discuss the matter.

Railroads Ordered to Reduce Fares for Passengers

The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered American railroads to charge two cents per mile for coach fares and three cents per mile for Pullman transport. After a nearly two year investigation the commission found the prior 3.6 cent standard fare unreasonable and eliminated the Pullman surcharge while allowing special charges for certain bridges ferries and expensive tunnels. The new rates take effect June 2 1936 and apply to interstate travel on standard equipment with one way and round trip tickets.

Convicts Foiled Escape at Ohio Penitentiary

In Columbus on February 29 three Ohio penitentiary convicts attacked a 60-year-old unarmed guard at an inside gate and were repelled by shots from a guard's pistol, thwarting their attempted escape.

Cougars Lose at Greenville in Season Finale

Van Wert drops 40 to 24 at Greenville to end 1935-36 basketball season with a 9-9 record. Next week the Scarlet and Gray play Bowling Green in the Defiance Class A tournament at 8 p.m. Thursday. Hayes scored 19 for Greenville, while Fifimes led Van Wert with six points.

Record of 1935 county tournament notes Middle Point beating Union 31 to 19 then Hoaglin Jackson 33 to 19 to claim the title over Tully Convoy 28 to 24. Convoy reached the final by beating Wren 31 to 28 and York 21 to 18. York earlier beat Wiltshire 26 to 16 and Ohio City 38 to 25. Hoaglin Jackson lost in the semi finals to the champions. Semi finals dominate county tourney action this afternoon

Four strong teams remain in the county league with Wiltshire Wren Ridge and Ohio City in line for the title. Semi finals set for 2 and 3 pm, followed by the 9 pm girls and boys championship games. Tonight six awards will be presented to winning squads and sportsmanship trophies announced.

Old 1837 Gun In Dannison Family Presented as Heirloom

Sam Dannison of 327 South Wayne Street owns an antique fowling gun dated 1837 that may mark its hundredth birthday next year. The 44 inch barrel weighs 12 pounds and features cherry stock with brass trim and a Danzig side plate. The owner suspects the weapon saw Mexican War use and even holds an X mark on the barrel top, suggesting it may have killed a man.
