After five days of success the fair ended Saturday night due to a heavy rain. Stock parades were moved to Saturday for Mrs Butler’s funeral with 25 horses 22 mules and 24 cattle. The event featured pig clubs a wild west show and local talent drawing large crowds.
The Central Church of Christ announces Bible School at 9 30. Sermons by Rev A L Martin at 10 30 a m and 7 30 p m. Mrs E E Wright of Monroe Louisiana will sing at the morning service.
Plans were set for joint institutes this winter with teachers from Salamonie and Van Buren township schools including Warren and Van Buren high schools. Institutes will meet monthly on Saturdays alternating between Van Buren and Warren, with morning sessions on reading circle reports and afternoon meetings for primary and high school teachers to discuss topics of interest. Superintendents H. H. Scott and Rex Potters announced the arrangement.
A son of George Boller had a swarm of bees at his father's home. A thief tried to steal the hive Friday evening, using a large sack. The bees fought back, leaving the thief's straw hat and a large carry poke behind. No witnesses. The piece ends with a bee poem.
A spare tire was stolen from the machine of Frank Culbertson Saturday night. This was the only theft reported during the street fair.
Dr James F Roberts veterinarian reports hog cholera widespread in the county and neighboring townships. He says many hogs are lost even with immunization efforts and insists on strict sanitation and isolation of sick animals to prevent financial ruin for farmers.
Franklin Township unit of the Grant County Agricultural association met in Michealsville Bay night and passed strong resolutions prohibiting hunting and trespass on member farms without a written permit. They voted to form a Co operative Live Stock Shipping association modeled after Van Buren township. Five directors were elected: B S Morrison C H Thomas B W Shields Melvin King and W K Mendenhall.
Miss Opal Messismith comes back to her home Friday following a visit with Miss Agnes Dillon.
The forty second Grant County W C T U convention met in Marion and adopted strong resolutions against tobacco use by those with young people in charge such as school teachers. Officers elected include President Lida Outland and vice president Della Kirkpatrick.
The Edgewood Country Club is formed near Roll to finance two tennis courts on the Thompson farm one mile west of Independence church. Officers elected: B C Green president R M Templeton vice president Frances Johnson secretary and treasurer. Members include Clifton Green Charles Johnson Harry Holloway Robert Martin Robert Thompson Clara Thompson Vaughn Johnson Francis Johnson Glen Nelson and Ross Templeton with more to join soon.
Rank Deuel of Chicago is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. James Deuel, spending time with family during a planned local visit.
Nine of thirteen Grant county townships plan higher total levies for 1921 based on estimates. Fairmount faces the largest drop of 17.5 cents, Sims down 10 cents, Jefferson down 3, Pleasant unchanged, and Center up 46 cents to lead increases.
A rally day and all day meeting will be held at Otterbein on Sunday October 2. Rev. Myers will preach in the forenoon and Rev. Day of Huntington in the afternoon. A basket dinner at noon and an invitation to all friends and the public. An interesting program is planned.
President Taylor greets a surge of enrolled students from Knoxville and across the country. Cars from nearby towns rush to Taylor to deliver riders as the dining hall schedules two sittings to manage meals. Automo biles from dozens of states arrive, with Canada Cuba Porto Rico and several South American nations among the represented locales.
Report says organizers and guards planned for champion hogs at a brick building used for the show. A group from Van Buren approached to intervene, discovering a gambling den in the upper story left open all summer. The marshal will supervise now to halt the games.
Herman King of Sweetser won the sweepstakes prize for his Poland China pig at the Boys and Girls Pig Club show held with the Grant county stock show. Judge W. C. Suttles noted Alvin Skinner had the top score for Berkshire, but King took the overall best type award amid a large county turnout.
Harry E. Garrison, longtime manager of the Farmers Elevator Company of Van Buren, has purchased a 75 000 bushel capacity elevator at Raub Benton county and will move his family there around October 10. The former cooperative elevator, now in receivership, stands as a major grain facility in a strong farming area, with Garrison noting his vast experience in grain and coal trades and calling Raub a fine opening for his family.
A number of articles from the fair gymnasium were stolen at closing. Authorities identify a likely suspect who may face prosecution if items are not returned. Among the losses were the first prize cake canned goods and pumpkins. A few pumpkins and corn await owners at the News Eagle office and can be claimed by calling.
