Diphtheria Forces School Closures at Montpelier

Diphtheria cases prompt two week closure of Montpelier Indiana schools and closures at Matamorse and Irvin in Blackford county after Thurl Rinard and Max Brotherton were quarantined. over twenty quarantined and four deaths reported. Fairmount also tightens restrictions as multiple homes go under diphtheria quarantine and school cultures are tested.

City Garage Changes Hands in Marion

Carr and Weicht of Marion purchase City Garage on North First from Chauncey Lucas who will stay through winter to manage electrical work. New owners plan to keep high quality service and the same line of supplies. They will move to Van Buren with families. Carr considers relocation soon.

Mrs May Mc Kinsey suffered a broken collar bone and hip injury while her husband was bruised when their car collided with a city street car at a crossing in Marion Indiana. He works as an ambulance driver at the Marion Sannitarium.

Monroe Township unit bans hunting and endorses anti party conduct

At a Monroe Township meeting of the Grant County Agricultuary Association the board's resolutions condemning immoral automobile parties were endorsed. No hunting will be allowed without written owner permission. A local shipping point will be formed with the Co operative Livestock Shipping Association at Upland with three directors chosen now and two to be named by Jefferson township unit.

Washington township unit of the Grant County Agricultural association passed resolutions to curb immorality along country roads at Morris Chapel church. Prominent Men to Address Marion Americanization Meeting

A major Americanization meeting is set for Marion on October 14 with speeches by notable figures including Hon James J Davis secretary of labor and director general of LOOM Governor Warren T McCray Senator Harry S New Maj Parker Wendell Wilkie Fred Van Nuys Geg H B Smith Ed Jackson Lexie Downham and others. Marion Candidate Unable to Vote for Himself

Dr. B. C. Brimacombe, Republican candidate for Marion’s third ward council, will not vote for himself in the upcoming election. A longtime resident and former city councilor, he was born in Canada and has not completed the required second papers for citizenship, awaiting final action after a 90 day period. The new constitutional amendment granting full citizenship will strip him of the vote this fall.

Frank D Mathias Honored In Central Bank Portrait

The Central National Bank of Bartlesville Oklahoma features Frank D Mathias son of John Mathias in its September issue Super Service credits him as assistant cashier. Born March 5 1881 in Grant County Indiana he grew up in Van Buren Indiana and graduated from Van Buren High School in 1916. He worked at Grant Trust and Savings Bank before moving to Bartlesville in 1918 to join Union National Bank then Central National Bank as teller later elected assistant cashier July 1 1921. He is active in YMCA church Mason and various city organizations.

Poultry Culling Campaign Reported In Knox County

County Agent W J Piggott led eighteen August culling demonstrations in Knox County. About 32 250 hens were culled in August from farm flocks, totaling 161 260 pounds marketed. Savings include 4837 50 from price differences and 1000 for feed, totaling 5837 50 for the campaign.

Tuberculosis Society Seeks Members in Grant County

Miss Lila Powell executive secretary of the Grant County Tuberculosis Society toured Van Buren on Monday meeting locals about the society’s work and a membership campaign. A Health Crusade was planned in third and fourth grades with teachers’ cooperation. The membership committee includes Mrs. T. C. Pike, Mrs. Daisy Lee, Mrs. D. L. Strider, Mrs. Sadie Akers, Mrs. H. A. Davis, Mrs. Bessie Leas, Prof. H. H. Scott, and Dr. Richardson.

The first issue of the High School Emblem this year appeared Wednesday and met hearty student approval. The four page paper with five columns per page offers engaging school news prepared by students and reflects credit on editors and managers.
