The Grant County Medical Society held a large migratory meeting Tuesday evening at the Van Buren Methodist church. A chicken dinner preceded the scientific program as doctors and their wives gathered amid festive decorations and music before the address. Continued on page eight.
Half of the second annual free street fair has passed with praise for its breadth and educational value. Poultry judge Claude Enslen praised the awards in Marion with no dissent, and seeks American Poultry Association licensing. The poultry section reports 286 chickens, 2½ ducks, 6 geese, 6 turkeys, 5 pigeons, 4 guinea hens, 40 rabbits, 45 guinea pigs, plus dogs and other pets. Livestock displays, including horses shown after the school parade, impressed with their beauty and variety.
A group of twelve South Dakota cowboys, newly formed for the dull season, performed in Muncie with no name or organization. They travel with about thirty horses under the Van Buren fair association sponsor, and a $40 prize is offered for any animal a cowboy cannot ride.
Grant county and local school leaders including county and city superintendents township trustees school boards attendance officers high school principals and other officials will meet September 23 in Marion. Program covers new attendance laws inspection of schools classification of elementary schools and review of other school laws led by state and Grant county officials.
The Van Buren gymnasium has been stuccoed by Wricht & Wimmer of Marion. The firm, noted for quality work, promises results equal to the best in the trade.
County agents and their work were endorsed in a resolution by the fourth district at the Indiana Federation of Farmers Associations meeting in Marion. A second resolution urged passage of the Truth in Fabric bill to require labeling of pure wool content. A shipping organization for Grant county was postponed until the next Grant County Agricultural Association board meeting on September 26, with W H Suttle assisting.
The Bluffton Banner reports Jackson township solved the Twin Lakes problem by opening a 12 inch tile ditch that drains into the Salamonie. Water levels have fallen about 14 inches since Tuesday, with estimates that the lakes may be dry within ten days to two weeks, freeing the area from long-standing flooding and road damage.
Gilbert Losure and Curtis Nelson are overseeing additions at Taylor University in Upland. The project will continue for some time and is described as converting the campus into a wonderful place.
Van Buren civil town tax levy filed with county auditor shows 0.55 on the 100 this year, down from 0.80 last year. Budget set at 65 000 with net taxable property 847 550. Itemized fund totals include General 0.60 and Street light 0.165. Bond and municipal 0.25. total 0.86.
A Van Buren fair feature, the Boys and Girls Pig Club Show, draws broad interest with prizes totaling 31 14 offered by the Van Buren Fair Association and Grant County Agricultural Association. Judges, district officials, and dinner provisions are announced as part of the event with multiple prize classes for different breeds and sweepstakes awards.
The new F. and A. M. band gave its first public performance at the gymnasium on Friday night. They played several selections in good form and are set to enliven this week's street fair, with local pride expressed for the new lively band.
Pupils at Van Buren high school plan to publish a school paper pending patronage. Part of the staff is already secured and the remainder will be appointed within a short time.
Marion Indiana September 22 The Grant County Agricultural association directors condemn cars parked along country roads after dark as a moral nuisance for farmers families. They plan to organize farmers to stop the practice and discuss hunting on farms with no action due to lateness. The county fair plans are dropped and the next meeting date shifts to September 26 because of the Vi Buren fair.
