Fire alarm calls men to Burkhart farm brush fire near Van Buren

A rural fire alarm summoned many downtown men to Walter Burkhart’s farm south of Van Buren. Burning brush spread to a fence and threatened S. G. Robinson’s woods and other property. Volunteers battled the flames and guarded the timber until the danger passed, with water later applied to stumps to prevent a resurgence.

Aunt Lucy Martin Lays To Rest At State Soldiers Home

Mrs Lucy Martin died at the State Soldiers Home in Lafayette after moving there with her sister. Undertaker H A Davis was sent from Van Buren to manage funeral arrangements per Mrs Martins wishes. Born near Greensburg Indiana, she was about eighty. survived by Jos Chelton and a Kansas sister, and by Mrs Nancy Ault. Burial occurred at the Home cemetery.

Mrs Elam Endsley Burned In Coffee Boiler Accident

While visiting the river north of Van Buren Mrs Elam Endsley suffered severe burns when steam from a boiling coffee can blew off the lid. Her face and upper body were burned, she was rushed to Van Buren for care and returned home to Marion where she was reported improving.

Methodist Baseball Triumph Over Lafontaine Nine

A good sized crowd witnessed the Van Buren Sunday School team edge Lafontaine 5 to 4 Tuesday afternoon. Van Buren built a 4 2 lead by the fourth inning as DePoy and Doyle drove in runs and Gunn added two. Lafontaine rallied with two in the first and two more before Van Buren closed out the game. Bill Williamson and Dean Faxton starred on defense and pitching for Van Buren in a close, hard fought contest.
