Local freight agent Charles E. Hatcher reports the Clover Leaf, Toledo St. Louis & Western, is now the Clover Leaf Branch of Nickel Plate. Engines will bear Nickel Plate marks and extensive track upgrades begin in Grant county from Marion westward. Residents recall its narrow gauge beginnings and celebrate improved passenger and freight links through Van Buren to New York, St. Louis, and the Pacific coast, with expected service enhancements not yet officially confirmed.

Upland High Wins State Bible Study Honors

Upland High School led by Supt C C Thomas with 3054 points to win the state Bible study contest sponsored by the YMCA. Jeffersonville, Terre Haute State Normal, and Daleville followed with 2833 2666 and 2652 points. A silver cup prize will be awarded at the new school year opening. Thomas will supervise Van Buren Schools next year and introduce Bible study in local schools.

Balloon over Indiana traced from Indianapolis to Montpelier

A large balloon, part of the July 4 flight from Indianapolis, passed over Van Buren near midnight last week. Homer Ferguson and family, returning from Warren, noted the craft above the Harry Creviston farm crossroad and asked its identity. The balloon then moved on, with locals guessing it landed near Montpelier.

Ku Klux Klan Leader Addresses Grant County Concert Crowd

Runaway Team Collides With Auto In City Incident

A runaway livery team attached to Walter Maddux’s hay wagon startled by a blast or tire burst collided with Don Bockmier’s northbound auto near the City Garage. The wagon damaged the car top and rear fender, but no horse injuries occurred as the team halted near the Van Buren State Bank corner after one horse fell.
