Local Gymnasium Opens With Three Games Planned

A new gymnasium hosts a three game opener with the Lafontaine American Legion Five and Legion second team top liners along with two local high schools. Proceeds go to the building fund while rules limit use and govern conduct and supervision by a board of directors.

First basketball games in Van Buren new gym January 22

Don Richardson reports the Van Buren community will attend the opening basketball night at 7 p.m. with a freshman versus sophomore opener, followed by Lafontaine American Legion II against Van Buren Athletic Association II, and the main matchup Van Buren First Team versus Lafontaine Legion. The piece notes practice shortages, captain Wal­ter Creviston leading the local team, and a new gym rules set by the Athletic Association directors.

John Corey traveled to Indianapolis on Tuesday to attend the rabbit show. He exhibits some of his best rabbits and has earned many ribbons in state showrooms through his successful rabbit business.

Francis Baker son of J M Baker who lives northwest of town has returned from Lafayette where he attended the Purdue Short Course. He is greatly pleased with the work and believes the course is worth the time for any young man to take.

John Corey Wins Top Prizes at Marion Show

Our townsman John Corey proprietor of the D M and R E Rabbitry exhibited three Flemish Giants at the Marion Poultry and Pet Stock Show last week and captured First Senior Flemish Steel Grey doe First Senior Flemish Black doe and Fifth Senior Gray Flemish buck. The judge said the Marion class was the largest he had ever judged with 35 rabbits compared with 25 in Chicago.

Elderly resident Mr Hiram Zack aged 82 sustained a severe fall while leaving the Eli Morris residence after collecting water. He broke his right arm at the shoulder blade, with recovery viewed as slow and recovery outcome uncertain by his family.

Narrow escape for Geo Bechtel near Landersville

Mr Geo Bechtel of Landersville area escaped serious harm last Thursday when a horse drawn buggy he rode was frightened and ran away. He was thrown from the vehicle, struck his head and left shoulder, a Van Buren physician hastened to treat him and he is now recovering steadily.

Nursery to Care for Babies at Grant County Farm Course

Marion Indiana January 19 officials of the Grant County Agricultural Short Course say a complete nursery will be provided for attending mothers next week January 26 and 27. The nursery in Marion High School will be supervised by the Red Cross with nurses on hand to care for ill or engaged children enabling more women to attend. The preparations aim to make this the largest short course yet held in the state.

Farmers Drive AWA membership rises toward 1700

Grant County Agricultural association aims for 1700 members after Clean-up Day results. 1500 to 1600 reported so far with more townships forthcoming. Van Buren township launches a strong drive with outside help as county teams plan canvassing. Directors meet Saturday January 29 to discuss plans.

Grant County Short Course At Marion Next Week

The Grant County Free Short Course will be held at Marion High School January 26 and 27. It targets farmers bankers merchants teachers and homemakers with general and special sessions. Lectures by Percy Holden of Corn Holden and R R Robertson of Ohio cover farming and fruit topics. Eight film reels will be shown and county students may attend with registration. Committees include Executive Publicity and Finance with local officials and educators leading planning efforts.
