Alva Duckwall and Homer Duckwall spent part of last week at the lakes hunting ducks. They followed the tips of John Howard and Wm. Duckwall but waded neck deep, hid in brush, and failed to bag a duck. Alva admits missing the secret, and Homer jokes they may learn by age like the others.
The Independents defeated the M. E. Sunday school team 21 to 18 at Upland in their season opener. Upland led 6 0 at start, trailed 15 6 at halftime, then outscored 12 6 in the second half but could not overcome the first half margin. Next Wednesday they play Jonesboro American Legion at Jonesboro with Creviston Banter W Melling Doyle Beck G Melling in the lineup. Merrell refereed.
E H DePoy and his daughter Miss Margaret attended Sunday school at the First M E church in Bluffton. They heard an excellent sermon in the morning service delivered by Bishop Frederick Leete of Indianapolis.

A representative of an independent chautauqua company spent days here to drum up support. A library meeting Tuesday night drew a small crowd, though several expressed willingness to back the project later. The writer notes that sustained interest must involve regular meeting attendance.
Mrs Clint Ducknall narrowly escaped serious injury last Saturday night after slipping on a long staircase while carrying a lantern. She fell against a nearby stove at the foot of the stairs, injuring her right side and arm but is improving as expected.
Mr. John LeFavour underwent a second eye surgery in Marion to remove a heavy tissue growth in the corner of the eye. He believes the sight remains intact and hopes for lasting benefit from the procedure.

Farmers of the township gather at the library Saturday night to organize a general meeting and banquet before January 7 when the membership drive begins. They aim to establish permanent Federation headquarters and have faced meeting space shortages. County secretary O. W. Florea attended Wednesday night to discuss future plans with the local association.
The M. E. Ladies Aid plans its annual Xmas Bazaar and market December 17 and 18 in the room first west of the News Eagle office. The event runs Friday noon to Saturday and invites all church members, friends, and the public to donate and shop to support the church during the Christmas season.
