A Cincinnati man is convicted in the death of a Port Union four year old girl in a traffic incident. The verdict follows the investigation and court proceedings reported on page 2. The case highlighted the ongoing concerns over road safety and child protection in the community.
Liberty Township Trustees plan to accept a donated 4.3 acre site in Dutchland Woods south of Yankee Road for a second firehouse. The land frontages about 300 feet on Yankee with 600 feet depth, and acceptance date was not set. Residents supported a strings-free donation to aid future township staffing and cost savings.
An undetermined fire damaged a saturating building at Nicolet Industries Inc on Rockdale Road Hamilton after 5 am Sunday. A 500 gallon standby kerosene tank exploded, flames rose, two workers escaped as fire safety systems triggered. Firefighters from five departments prevented spread to other fuel tanks and confined the blaze to the roof area. Plant manager hopes to resume operations in one to two weeks.
Union Township Trustee Emile Munch indicated the township may appropriate general funds for recreation work including land grading and ball diamond backstops. He and Butler County Assistant Prosecutor Dan Fischer discussed legal limits, with a written report expected. the new recreation committee did not attend.
The Liberty Township Trustees heard that the petition to rename Maustown to North Princeton was withdrawn. Residents may still call the area Clawson Subdivision by legal name, while others keep Maustown. Other actions included park land consideration, a police dog kennel, salary move for Patrolman Lynn Brown, a gasoline contract awarded to Hamilton Oil, and street drainage and ditching projects. Memorial Day parade planning set for June 19.
Memorial Day services honor America's war dead with wreaths at seven flags in the township cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. State Senator William Massey speaks. Rev. Doerbaum and Rev. Marshall provide invocations and benediction. Earlier, a 1:30 p.m. parade departs from Union School on Cincinnati. Union Township Boy Scouts place wreaths arranged by local garden clubs.
Firemen conduct a countywide fire school drill at a large white house once owned by the Burmeister family on Tylersville Road near Cox Road. The home, sold for subdivision development, was set ablaze for training after earlier real-blaze activity at Nicolet Industries in Liberty Township.
Home Federal Saving and Loan begins construction on a colonial style Pisgah branch at Route 42 and West Chester Road. The 2,000 square foot office includes a 1,300 square foot community room with kitchen and will open this fall replacing the current 9299 Cincinnati Columbus Road office opened in October 1970.
