Cum mings Man Killed As Car Plunges Over 600-Foot Cliff

Officers identified Maurice Sirois of Cummings as the driver whose car plunged over a 600 foot embankment near Westport. Deputy Coroner Ed Axt said the body was recovered on the beach by highway patrolmen and sheriff's deputies and taken to Cannarr Funeral home in Fortresse.

Education Board to be elected under new act in Mendocino

The Mendocino county committee on school district organization studied steps to switch from appointed to elected county board members. The board will have five or seven trustees elected from districts, with elections aligned to district trustee votes. The first election under the rule is set for May 1956, with terms starting July 1.

Annexation Vote Slated Tuesday For South Area

Residents of the area between the south city limits and Beacon Lane will vote next Tuesday on annexation to the City of Ukiah. Polls at Vidah Missionary Tabernacle dining room open 7 am to 7 pm. Boundary lines run Highway 101 to the west of Helen Avenue. Cox Norgard addition and lands owned by Melvin Junger and Victor and Mabel Bergstrom are excluded. Election officials are Ruth Cross, Alice Lorraine Daniel, and Helen M. Covert.

Three Day Church Meeting Opens Friday in Ukiah

Jehovah's Witnesses district supervisor N Kovalak arrives from Alaska to open a three day circuit assembly at Carl Purdy Hall and the District Fairgrounds. He will deliver the opening address on Qualified for the Ministry and oversee a Theocratic Ministry School session with local and visiting speakers. Seven year old George Heath Jr. contributes a Bible verse discourse and H A Fetzik coaches the Friday night program. All sessions are public and Kovalak's Sunday talk is Overcoming the Years of This Generation.

FBI School To Teach Fingerprinting At Ukiah Courthouse

Sheriff Reno Bartolomie announced a five day FBI fingerprinting and photography school will run October 24 to 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. on the courthouse third floor in Ukiah. Special Agent Ray Quinn leads the classes with attendance from all sheriff's deputies and invited county police to join.

Board toHear Spur Track Plan in Calpella

The board of supervisors will hold a hearing Monday Oct 24 on a proposal for a spur track to cross the highway at the Durable Wood Company in Calpella. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad made the request, prompting objections from Calpella residents. The session continues an earlier meeting where both sides presented arguments.

City Hopes To Avoid Boost In Power Charges At Once

Ukiah city officials seek to delay a power rate rise by negotiating a new PGE contract and overhauling the electrical system. City Manager Charles Keene says efficiency gains and removing boilerplate from the R rate may spare residents from a sudden 26 percent increase while eight of nine northern California cities review seven year resale contracts. Roseville opposes the package, fearing loss of federal power if bound to the PGE deal.

9 Point Plan Proposed for Ukiah Recreation Setup

City Recreation Director Joe Juliana submitted a 1954 55 fiscal year report with nine recommendations including building a community recreation facility, pool filters, separate activity supervisors for women and men, a maintenance foreman, an administrative secretary, an assistant golf greenskeeper, an equipment depreciation program, and continued participation in Little Pony and Colt League baseball. Disbursements rose from 37,778.79 to 41,352.51, revenues from 19,250.20 to 12,344.88, and net costs from 24,528.59 to 29,007.78. per person costs dropped from 45 to 36 cents, and per participant costs from 29 to 25 cents. Last year’s activity increased in days, games, players, children, adults, and spectators.

Five Seek Round Valley Judge Post

Tax Payment Time Starts November First

Mendocino county property owners are reminded that the first installment is due November 1 and becomes delinquent December 12 with a 6 percent penalty. The second installment is due February 1 and delinquent April 10 with a 6 percent penalty and a per line charge for preparing the delinquent list. Both installments may be paid at the tax collector’s office when due.

Sanitarian Added To County Health Department Staff

James W. OMalley is named sanitarian for the Mendocino county health department. His employment was authorized by the board of supervisors and will start November 1. A Fresno County native and registered sanitarian, he comes from Fresno State College and brings five and a half years of prior health department experience.

Elks Carnival Set For This Weekend

Plans are complete for the sixth annual charity carnival to be held Friday and Saturday at the Ukiah Elks hall on South State Street. The event is open to the public with games and booths each evening and dancing Saturday night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Special awards and grand prizes will be presented.

Study by C of C board may lead Ukiah government change

Ukiah, operating under general law as a sixth class city, may consider charter or city manager forms. Either requires an election. charter involves a 15 percent voter initiation and a 15-member freeholder board to draft, with legislative approval. A city manager would place executive power in the manager appointed by the council, with civil service limits. See STUDY, Page Five.

Camp Fire Girl Fund Campaign Under Way in Ukiah

Ukiah aims to raise 1000 dollars for next year to fund Camp Fire program and activities. Al Whitney and Francis Connor lead the drive with Mrs. Leonard F Caouette endorsing the letters sent to residents. Over 200 girls benefit from the program including Blue Bird and teen ranks as the campaign asks for mailed gifts to Mrs. Joe Foutz.

Counseling Service Program Outlined At P TA Meeting

The Mendocino committee discussed a family counseling service at Pomolita P TA with a three member volunteer panel led by Mrs Rey Swain. John Oakes described the history of the recently incorporated non profit organization and Dr Earla Aggard filled the psychiatry gap after Dr Mervyn Shoor moved. The clinic is planned to open in two to three weeks with Roland Kussow detailing county welfare support.

Patrol Enforces Litter Bug Law in Mendocino-Lake County

Highway patrolmen across the Mendocino Lake district are enforcing the litter bug law Capt. C. K. Harder said yesterday. Several citations were issued with most violations on Highway 101 due to heavy traffic. Motorists were cited for dumping garbage and tossing beer cans onto the highway.
