Investigations into six deaths occurred over a 27 hour period ending Tuesday, including a truck crash near Rockport, a head injury near Laytonville, an industrial accident at Hopland, a newborn death near Ukiah, a coronary occlusion near Ukiah, and a fatal hit and run on Highway 101 near the Highway 20 junction.
The law firm of Broaddus and Golden relocates to the former Lon Gibson residence at 280 North Oak Street, just north of Ukiah post office. Attorneys Arthur Broaddus and John Golden purchased the property from Bunt Cox and moved in last weekend. They plan to develop the large house to house other business offices.
Attorneys petition the court to approve an 85000 bid by Mendocino Title Co for state street property in Ukiah. The site fronts State street and Main street, includes a 980 foot State street frontage and 200 foot depth, with buildings including the 108 Club and Ukiah Taxicab office. If approved, a new office building is planned. other bids must exceed 10 percent.
Taxable retail sales in Menda cim county rose to 13,317,000 in the second quarter of 1955, up 12.87 percent from a year earlier. Statewide taxable transactions hit 4,475,600,000, a new quarterly high, with self-assessed taxes totaling 134,298,000 and the fiscal year revenue at 496,262,400.
A father driving his infant son to UC San Francisco for treatment stopped ten miles north of Ukiah when the baby stopped breathing. The infant, child of Mr and Mrs Oran Cunningham, had spinal defect and died from bilateral streptococcal pneumonia after arrival at Ukiah General Hospital. The baby was taken to Eversole Mortuary for funeral arrangements.
Ukiah CWA union members and other Northern California workers strike leading to replacement voices on the Pacific Telephone long distance switchboard. Supervisors operate the board as negotiations with the company continue in San Francisco. Company offices and plant operations are picketed in Ukiah.
The Sisters of the Albertinum and El Rosario schools seek donations to finish the Albertinum gymnasium. Trusses up roof on, siding three sides, plumbing and heating equipment needed. Residents may view the Oak and Stephenson streets campus and mail contributions to the Sisters.
The sixth annual Ukiah Elks lodge charity carnival is set for October 21 and 22 at the Elks hall. Carnival chair Dick Davis says the public event features games each evening and Saturday dancing from 10 pm to 2 am with special awards and grand prizes.
Mrs Si Boynton of 413 Hillview won the weekly $10 forecast prize in The Ukiah News Merchants grid contest with nine correct winners from 12 games. The upset-filled entry list includes runnerups Ray Kingwell Boonville L W Nations Calpella Torrance U Redwood Valley Robert L Crabb Ukiah and Doris Rees Roseburg Oregon.
Harlan L. P. Wendell of Du Pont will speak to Ukiah Rotary on October 18 about Progress Must Be Created. He will discuss American progress through factory innovation and provide production examples. Wendell has held multiple Du Pont roles and served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
The Ukiah fire department holds its annual Fire Prevention Week dinner tonight at the firehouse. Guest speaker is Jay Stevens assistant manager of the National Board of Fire Underwriters. City and county officials plus Mendocino and Lake counties fire department representatives attend.

Ten Ukiah area residents correctly named the Robert Guidi farm and Winery on River Road as last week’s Mystery Farm. Winning Ukiah theatre tickets went to Rena Webb Edith Welch D G Thompson Mrs Roy Adrevano and Mrs Gene Richardson, all of Ukiah. Others guessing the farm included Betty Foster Richard Giovannetti Mrs Philip Lynch Jack Fravel and Mary Morgantt, Ullah.
The Ukiah recreation commission reviewed preliminary plans for a proposed recreation building at the municipal park. Weaver and Ingle of Ukiah prepared the design featuring a large social hall, kitchen, game room, nine small club rooms, offices, and a patio access. Architects estimate cost and prepare a materials list as part of the master plan.
The Ukiah Union High School night school will start next week offering shorthand typing sewing wood shop and bank accounting taught by faculty. Courses run 7 to 9 p.m with no enrollment fee. Shorthand and sewing begin Oct 17, typing Oct 18 twice weekly, wood shop and bank accounting on Oct 18 and Thursdays respectively.
Judge Fred Goss in the Ukiah district suspended a 30 day jail term for Robert Ches sire after a guilty verdict under the new litter bug law. Ches sire, of 345 N Main St, was placed on one year probation and ordered to clean up roadside garbage. It marks Mendocino County’s first conviction under the act. Mrs Lupe Chavez was cited but did not appear in court.
Kiwanis club announces a benefit show at the State Drive-In Theater next Wednesday October 19 to raise funds for the children’s relief fund. Tickets available from any Kiwanian or at the box office. Features include Randolph Scott in Thunder Over the Plains and Bob Hope in Casanova’s Big Night. Chairman of the committee is Jack Wegesser.
Lamar Tucker, an insurance agent, was elected president of the Ukiah Kiwanis club at a Tuesday night election meeting at the Maple cafe. New officers include Walter Farney as first vice president Sam Davina as second vice president Arthur O Rourke as treasurer and board members Hesseltine Walt Bogner John Thompson Lloyd Ely Dave Long Cal Comini Kermit Brown and Mac Lang. The group plans installation at the first January meeting and Bechtol, Ukiah fire chief, spoke during National Fire Prevention Week about the department's growth and functions. The club also reported about 600 raised from a pancake feed for its youth fund.
Mendocino County deputy Dale Meredith was discharged by Sheriff Bartolomie on October 5 after a mix up in serving citations to three men charged with trespass while hunting on Allen White’s lands at Bell Springs. The three defendants John Ingram Gerald Rickner and Sidwin Flagger were released on their own recognizance and will set hearings with Judge Carver next week. Meredith’s dismissal cited unofficer like conduct and drinking on and off duty as factors in the error.
Redwood Empire association to convene across nine counties with taxpayers and business, agricultural, and industrial representatives. Reed W. Robinson to preside. sessions include retiring and incoming boards October 21 22. Banquet October 22 features Robert R. Gros of PG E as toastmaster.
The Anderson Valley apple crop moves to canneries and markets in San Francisco the east coast and South America. County Agricultural Commissioner Ted Eriksen Jr. says quality is good but total harvest may reach about 6500 tons, down from 7500 last year. Main varieties are Golden Delicious and Jonathans, with peak picking late this week or early next. First picking occurred around Sept 8, with major shippers including Archie Shoenahl Wilson B Cook George Bennett Earl Clark M C Gowan and Mrs A K Morgan Elk.
Fair Manager F P Stipp announced approval of plans for a 61000 home economics building at the 12th District Fair Grounds. State architecture division approved the plans and state public works funded the project. The steel frame hall will measure 40 by 80 feet with 1200 extra square feet for kitchen and regs. It will seat 350 for dining and 600 for non banquet uses.
Collier Transportation Company plans to relocate its entire base to Ukiah near junction of Highway 20 and 101. The move adds 40 line haul diesel trucks and 75 employees with about 450 000 dollars annual payroll, boosting the Ukiah economy. A steel frame 80 by 240 foot building by Armstrong and Son will house repair shops and dispatch offices, with 100 000 dollar plus costs for site work by Siri Construction.
A potluck dinner for city employees and officials plus their families will be held Friday at the municipal clubhouse starting at 6 p.m. Invitees include city council and planning commissions members and their families. The city recreation department sponsors the event providing coffee and soft drinks. Each family should bring their own dinner service.
Invitations were mailed for the annual fall meeting of District 7B California Garden Clubs Inc to be held Wednesday October 19 at the Potter Valley community church. Coffee starts at 10 am with sessions morning and afternoon. Lunch is provided by Women of the church. reservations should go to Mrs Irene Bufford Potter Valley. Mrs Earl Snook of Willits presides Mendocino district clubs.
William Kirkpatrick of Ukiah was critically wounded while hunting in Idaho. He was carried seven miles down a hill and then another dozen miles to a trail by a relay of hunters using a travois and a horse. Drs Munson and Eakin from Sandpoint joined the rescue, providing care through the night. A helicopter from Missoula tried to reach Elk Summit but weather halted the flight.
