For the sixth consecutive year the Methodist church will host a Thanksgiving dinner in the social hall on Thanksgiving Day. Church men began the reenactment six years ago to cook turkeys and share a holiday meal, inviting local families and individuals who would otherwise eat alone.
The Mendocino county water council offered to resign to allow the board of supervisors to reorganize the council. Members cited need for skilled technical advice to develop a county wide water policy and handle ongoing projects.
The Pioneer Caspar Lumber company ends operations at Caspar after 92 years, with two million board feet of logs and seven million board feet of timber sold to Union Lumber. The mill's land holdings and other properties will be announced later. C. J. Woods now heads the family firm based in San Francisco.
Lola Montes and her Spanish dancers return to Ukiah High School auditorium on November 30 at 8 15 p m for a program featuring eighteen numbers in authentic costumes and a mix of Spanish classical and Latin dances with pianist Oscar Kosches performing Chopin and other works.
A 1955 Thanksgiving message opens with Psalm 100 urging joyous praise. It emphasizes gratitude to the Lord for creation and mercy and invites all lands to enter with singing and thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving services will be held at First Baptist church in Ukiah at 10 a m with ministers from several denominations and Rev Robert F Haines delivering the main address Several churches cooperated in planning the service and residents are invited The program includes hymns readings prayers and a procession of corn kernels to honor Pilgrim customs
Last week a single entrant correctly identified the Fiora farm north of Ukiah. Fred Wong of 519 South School Street wins two free tickets to the Ukiah theatre, which can be picked up at The Ukiah News office on 100 North School Street.
Five State street crossings for school children have been established and will be patrolled by police officers. The crossings are Low Gap Road and North State street, Standley street and State street, Perkins street and State street, Gobbi street and State street, and Washington street and State. Patrol hours are 8 am to 9 am and 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
The Sononga County Blood Bank sponsored by the Potter Valley Grange will hold a drive at the Grange hall in Potter Valley on Saturday November 26 from 10 to 2. Residents are urged to donate to boost now low funds. Donors should fast four hours prior, allowed only black coffee fruit juice and water.
A quarterly meeting of the northern California Association of School Administrators drew about 100 county and district superintendents to Ukiah. The session at the Blue Bonnet dining room included Marin Napa Sonoma Humboldt Del Norte Lake and Mendocino reps with a panel featuring Hogan Trillingham and Dr. Wood. They discussed a California Council report on education and recommendations for selecting state and county boards and superintendents.
The board of supervisors granted permission for Durable Fir Lumber and Plywood to install a spur railroad track across the Calpella Redwood Valley road. The vote was unanimous after a petition with over 1,000 signatures from employees and residents was presented by Arthur Yarbrough. Supporters included Paul Poulos and Joseph Scaramella while Harold Bainbridge, Joe Hartley and Harvey Sawyers opposed.
A $70,000 truck terminal north of Ukiah is planned as the forerunner of an industrial district. Stanley Watson owns the site formerly Ukiah Auction Yard and will lease to David Baldwin, operating with Walter Heady and General Petroleum. Three 10,000 gallon tanks and one 1,000 gallon tank are in place, with a cafe bunkhouse machine shop and 50 ton scales planned. The terminal aims to be in full operation by year’s start.
Yokayo district Scout leaders met November 21 at Frank Zeek School under W. B. Shields and C. J. Glysson. Walter Heady was introduced as neighborhood commissioner for Pack 65 Den 63 and troops 65 45. Sam Gardner discussed first aid in John Riley’s absence. Court of honor set for December 2 at Presbyterian church social hall. several Eagle awards expected. A joint pack meeting is planned for December 9.
Mendocino county water council adopts resolutions urging early Eisel crossing dam construction on the Hel River to aid Mendocino Sonoma Napa and Solano counties with water for Round Valley and existing projects Monticello and Coyote Valley. The group cites oil royalty funds and opposes shifting waters between areas.
Mendocino county wool growers attended the fall meeting at the 12th District fairgrounds. Demonstrations covered UC sheep grading, lamb feeding trials results, and future antibiotic use. Officials discussed dog law changes and meat demand trends impacting the lamb market in California.
A court hearing is scheduled Monday on an injunction to stop the sale of Coyote Valley bonds by Sonoma County. Judge Harold Jacoby will preside after judges disqualified. District Attorney Joseph Maddux filed a demurrer to strike the injunction. Defendants include the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors as directors of the Flood Control and Water Conservation district. Bids opened November 17 with Bank of America the low offer. the bid cannot be withdrawn for 60 days.
Engineers announce a new cost estimate of 18.325 million for the initial phase of the Coyote Valley dam in a letter to the Sonoma county supervisors. The prior estimate was 22 million, but county officials note the smaller figure does not reduce the counties' financial obligations.
In Mendocino County during the first week of the 1954 Christmas Seal drive, residents contributed 1,724.30, surpassing last year’s 1,519 by 308.30. Mrs. Claire Wilney notes heavy mail and checks in the Ukiah tuberculosis association office as early support builds for the 1955 effort.
The General Electric Company will present a preview of the electric utility industry in 1964 at the Palace Hotel Monday, Nov. 28. The program called General Electric's 64 Program will feature two key GE representatives, motion pictures, slides, and literature starting at 7:30 after a dinner and cocktail hour.

Sheriff Reno Bartolomie said a witness is being questioned about the death of Paul Haskell a 42 year old inmate at Covelo county jail asphyxiation was ruled the cause. Haskell yelled let me out or I’ll burn the place down before being found dead beside charred bedding Sunday morning after a Saturday arrest for drunkenness.
