Arson Threat Near Regina Heights Endangers Expensive Homes

A reward of up to 500 dollars was posted for arsonists blamed for a Sunday afternoon fire on Vichy Heights at Regina Heights north Ukiah. Firefighting crews from Ukiah and Redwood Valley Calpella battled the blaze, aided by air tankers and Laytonville helicopter, containing it by 3:40 p.m. with 20 acres burned and no injuries except a forestry worker’s scratched eye. Call Willits Division of Forestry with information at 459-5562.

Car found at bottom of bluff. three missing on South Coast

A 1966 Ford wagon belonging to Kathleen Robie and her two daughters was found upside down at the base of a 100 foot bluff near Gualala after a late night departure. Divers and volunteers searched for the trio without success as authorities treat the case as a missing persons report and possible triple fatal. Authorities plan to inspect the wreck today for clues.

Timberland TPZ zoning hearing set before Ukiah board

A public hearing before the Ukiah board of supervisors is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Saturday Afternoon Clubhouse to discuss a timber preserve zone replacing Williamson's Act timber property. The ordinance outlines permitted uses without a permit and those requiring one including timber production and watershed management.

Ukiahi Phase II bids open on two phase high school plan

Ukiah Unified School District received bids for the locally funded portion of the new Ukiahi high school on Low Gap Road. Hunt Construction of Sacramento bid $3,552,000 for Phase II, with Wheatley Jacobsen of Palo Alto at $3,696,000 as the other bid. Total Phase I and II costs reach $8,052,000, still under last January’s total bid. Phase I set to begin around November 1 pending bond sales. The project is designed by Felciano Jefferies and Associates, Santa Rosa.

Record Pear Season Leaves Mendocino 10000 Tons Unharvested

Mendocino County saw a then unprecedented pear season with about 10,000 tons left unharvested. Farm advisor Bruce Bearden notes a late start and a 11 day cannery strike that delayed packing and contracts. Fresh market demand failed to absorb excess fruit, while prices narrowed the grower margin.
