A federal grand jury in San Francisco indicted Oscar H. Klee and Theodore A. Watkins of Mendocino on charges of preparing false income tax returns for clients. Klee allegedly overstated deductions for nine clients in 1952 and 1953, totaling 22 000 while clients were entitled to 11 000. Watkins allegedly falsified returns for 12 clients, claiming 25 000 when only 9 500 was allowed. Klee defends innocence and vows to be vindicated.
A large dog owned by G F Newsom of Ukiah was destroyed while killing a flock at Herbert Singley’s ranch near the Forks. County pound master Lawrence Pacini said the dog killed one sheep and maimed four others before being destroyed and is investigating further sheep killings near Bob Rawles at Boonville and Horst Thompson at Westport.
Police report that an open warehouse at city corporation yards near the airport was entered last weekend and 1000 pounds of lead ingots were stolen. Chief George Smith said the ingots were in strings of five pigs weighing five pounds each.
Mendocino County will dedicate 4.8 miles of four lane divided highway from Willits to Ukiah next Sunday. District engineer Alan S. Hart and state highway commissioner Walter Sandelin will roll a log aside to officially open the freeway after a civic luncheon at Brooktrails lodge. The $1,760,000 project eliminates a major bottleneck on the Redwood Highway. Don MacMillan will preside at the luncheon and introduce Arthur Schilder who will serve as master of ceremonies.
President Eisenhower flies from Wayne Major to Louisville after a Detroit stop and promotes a growing prosperity with a Republican Congress. He blasts Democratic softness on communism as he campaigns in four states, drawing large crowds in Detroit and Cleveland despite rain.
Sheriff Broaddus informs Reno Bartolomie that publication of questions about qualifications for Sheriff and Coroner will be delayed until after his own answers appear. He accuses Bartolomie of implying crimes and threatens legal action if the implications are publicized.

Highs around 80 and lows near 36 to 48 in Ukiah Santa Rosa Napa areas, light to moderate coastal winds 7 to 15 mph. Patches of morning fog near Fort Bragg, otherwise fair through Saturday and into Sunday.
Stockholm reports Linus Carl Pauling, 53, of the California Institute of Technology, is favored to win the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Sources close to the Swedish Academy of Science said today that Pauling is slated to receive the honor.
