Crowds lined up to celebrate the five mile Ridgewood Summit bypass with a 4 lane highway opening. State highway commissioner Walter Sandelin and district engineer Alan Hart attended the dedication and grinned as a redwood log was removed to signal the start. The Willits Ukiah Chambers organized the event with a noon dinner at Brooktrails lodge and the new route aims to trim about ten minutes off Willits to Ukiah driving time.

Truck Driver Dies After Leaving Road
Richard B. Morris, 27, of Bakersfield, driving a loaded lumber truck and trailer, left the Redwood Highway five miles north of Laytonville Saturday morning and plunged into a six foot culvert pool. He was submerged about nine hours. Autopsy listed deaths from crushed chest skull fracture and multiple injuries. Funeral services will be held in Porterville where his mother resides.

Driver Alive After Spectacular Crash Near Willits
John Anglin of Los Angeles survived a Sunday crash 7.4 miles north of Willits after his car left the highway climbed a bank and overturned, skidded, crossed sides of the road and went over a 4 foot embankment. He was hospitalized at Howard Memorial and, though severely injured, was reported alive Monday morning. He is 70 years old.
