Labor leaders repudiate Bartolomie endorsement in county race

In statements filed today Nindocino County labor leaders and Lee Roberts deny endorsing Reno Bartolomie. Roberts says Rawles' support of Bartolomie is personal only and not an official labor endorsement. He notes Rawles refused to pay a full page ad and vows to pursue payment to clear his name. John Haig time backs Sheriff Broaddus, urging county growth and expansion of the Sheriff's office while denying any labor ties to Bartolomie.

Gala Freeway Opening At Willits Draws 500 Cars

Crowds lined up to celebrate the five mile Ridgewood Summit bypass with a 4 lane highway opening. State highway commissioner Walter Sandelin and district engineer Alan Hart attended the dedication and grinned as a redwood log was removed to signal the start. The Willits Ukiah Chambers organized the event with a noon dinner at Brooktrails lodge and the new route aims to trim about ten minutes off Willits to Ukiah driving time.

Spotlight on Ukiah City Joint Meeting and Local Happenings

The Wednesday joint meeting of the county supervisors and Ukiah City Council ended amicably though no agreement on the valley sewer project was reached. A November 15 session is planned with engineers to pursue a practical joint plan. The move aims to avoid harming local union members’ voting rights, with Edin Hoffman Burden noting the polling place could not be relocated and fines are waived for Precinct One on that day.

Navy Air Rescue Sweep For Missing Four-Engine Plane

An epic air sea search spans 120 miles of Atlantic from New York to the Azores for a Navy four engine plane carrying 21 aboard. The mission, led by aircraft carriers and supported by ships and planes from Patuxent, Argentia, Norfolk, Bermuda, and more, covers 240000 square miles as crews pursue the missing craft with radar and surface craft assisting.

Truck Driver Dies After Leaving Road

Richard B. Morris, 27, of Bakersfield, driving a loaded lumber truck and trailer, left the Redwood Highway five miles north of Laytonville Saturday morning and plunged into a six foot culvert pool. He was submerged about nine hours. Autopsy listed deaths from crushed chest skull fracture and multiple injuries. Funeral services will be held in Porterville where his mother resides.

Driver Alive After Spectacular Crash Near Willits

John Anglin of Los Angeles survived a Sunday crash 7.4 miles north of Willits after his car left the highway climbed a bank and overturned, skidded, crossed sides of the road and went over a 4 foot embankment. He was hospitalized at Howard Memorial and, though severely injured, was reported alive Monday morning. He is 70 years old.

Meteor blamed for mysterious explosion across San Joaquin Valley
