Ukiah Chamber of Commerce mails ballot post cards to members asking opinion on a proposed four lane Redwood highway by-pass to divert downtown traffic. Secretary manager Paul Sutterley announced the survey amid study by directors and county supervisors endorsement.
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer arrives for three days of talks with President Eisenhower and Secretary of State Dulles on Germany rearmament and potential unification. They discuss Russia’s possible role, timing for new cold war talks, and allied efforts toward European unity including reviewing Paris Germany accords.
Northwestern California sees fair conditions today tonight and Friday with local fog on the coast Friday morning. Temperatures around Napa 77 to 41 Santa Rosa 78 to 37 Ukiah 78 to 35 Fort Bragg area fair with slightly cooler coastal winds 8 to 15 mph.
The Walling case is closed with no foul play suspected. Sheriff Broaddus said evidence and a hospital statement support an accidental fall by Santa Rosa lab technician Miss Margaret Walling, 39, who was found at the foot of a 150 to 200 foot bluff on the Eel River. She faces serious injuries but has a fair to good chance of recovery.

STOCKHOLM (UP) Ernest Hemingway, 56, won the 1954 Nobel Prize for literature for The Old Man and the Sea. The Swedish Academy cited his enduring influence on American letters and the idealistic tendencies of his recent work. He becomes the fifth American winner in the prize's 50-year history, joining Sinclair Lewis Eugene ONeill Pearl Buck and William Faulkner.
In Burbank a 29 year old auto salesman was held on suspicion of murder in the death of 47 year old Mary Von Elm wife of former golf champion George Von Elm. Her body was found sprawled in a car in a parking lot near a cocktail bar. In Los Angeles Vice President Richard Nixon warned that electing an anti Eisenhower Congress would mean a return to weakness in policy toward Communism.
City of Ukiah opposes joining the Ukiah Valley Sanitation District for an $816 700 trunk sewer and plant project. A joint meeting with the county supervisors reviewed two plans, with Brown and Caldwell urging city participation or a county contract. The council favored Plan B, keeping the River road plant separate while a new south site plant would be built, arguing two plants in operation is unnecessary.
City council discussed acquiring about 130 acres southeast of Calpella for a future disposal fill area. The land, previously owned by Ben McClintock and now by Lee B. Wilson and Gene Schamber, remains under serious consideration with no official action taken. The site lies roughly three quarters of a mile south and east of Calpella, with 60 acres in a vineyard and the rest idle pasture. sale price was not disclosed.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon planned three speeches in California to back Republican congressional candidates. In San Diego he claimed the nation improved against Communist threats in 20 months under Eisenhower, contrasting with seven years under Truman, and cited foreign policy gains despite foreign aid cuts.
A group of Northern California Democrats urged support for Governor Knight, predicting he will equal or surpass his 718,695 Democratic votes from the June primary. They cited his broad county sweep, incumbency, and acknowledged executive ability and labor ties as reasons for anticipated broad backing.
