Kuchel to Broadcast Tonight on Channel 5 TV

Senator Thomas H Kuchel announced a televised address for California voters at 6 15 p m on KPIX San Francisco The kinescoped program will be rebroadcast next week on stations across the state as Kuchel campaigns in Alameda County and the East Bay He touted 173 6 million in ship construction funding and a bill requiring 50 percent of government cargoes to be carried on American ships.

Sample Ballots Mailed Today In Mendocino County

Voters statewide receive sample ballots in the mail for the November 2 general election in Mendocino County. Each envelope includes 35 candidates for Ten-Mile Judicial District and 37 for others, plus a polling place card and a pamphlet on 20 state measures with Legislative Council analyses and pro and con arguments. County Clerk Jim Broaddus urges voters to keep their polling place cards to find the correct polling station and reduce calls on election day.

Fire crews respond to grass fire near Ukiah and smoke scare nearby

Fire department was called to the Frank Rogers home three miles south of Ukiah on the Redwood highway Thursday evening to extinguish a grass fire with no damage. A smoke scare at the Warren Brown home on Cleveland lane Friday morning prompted a response. hot furnace and no damage reported.

Northwestern California Weather Outlook Brief

Northwestern California remains fair today tonight and Saturday with a slight warmup Saturday. Coastal northwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Napa reaches around 70 with 45. Santa Rosa about 71 and 44. Ukiah near 73 and 44. Fort Bragg and nearby areas stay fair with little temperature change and coastal winds 10 to 20 mph.

Campaigns Across Middle West and West for Congress

GOP and Democratic campaigners pressed the fight for control of Congress in the Middle West and Far West. Nixon and Dirksen campaigned in Montana for D Ewart against Murray, while Stevenson spoke in Wisconsin and Johnson planned a New Mexico stop. Rayburn in Missouri and Knowland and Gore in California also campaigned as farm and power policy dominated voter concerns. Manslaughter Trial Starts For Laytonville Driver

Lyle G. Williams a 21 year old Laytonville truck driver faces a three day jury trial beginning Monday in Judge Hale McCowen's courtroom. He is charged with manslaughter after Wade Hampton Watts Jr. 34 died when a loaded lumber dolly and tractor Williams operated toppled onto Watts's car six miles south of Laytonville. The complaint alleges press negligence in truck operation. Watts was returning home to San Fernando with his family after a summer vacation.

Richardson Buys Ukiah Van and Storage

Ukiah Van and Storage Company changed ownership this week with Vern Richardson taking over as new owner when the sale closed Wednesday. Richardson, a Ukiah resident for five years, becomes distributor for General Petroleum products. Leonard Nix, founder in February 1946, will devote time to real estate and insurance and partner Will Nix joins Long Realty. Walter Heady gains the General Petroleum distributorship. Ukiah Van and Storage operates five vehicles and runs sizable warehousing and storage facilities in northern California.

Dean Dismisses Years Late Panty Raid at LSU

Baton Rouge, La. UP A stern LSU dean nicknamed The Bear and an honor guard of ROTC cadets quelled a panty raid by about 1000 students. The dean ordered Go home in two words as cadets stood in full dress. Police reported no injuries and no arrests. Tulane students had staged a similar raid in New Orleans earlier, with scuffles and four arrests for loud conduct.

Willits Mill Owner Dies Suddenly Today

Cleo Gerald Yocum 46 year old Willits mill owner died early this morning likely of a heart attack. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Howard Memorial Hospital at 2 30 a m. The seizure occurred while he slept at his Sherwood Hill home near Willits. Surviving is his wife Pauline. Funeral services will be held in Eugene Oregon with remains shipped this weekend from Anker Mortuary.

A Wednesday night American Legion potluck served 100 plus guests before 125 to 130 attendees in the assembly room heard Eugene Woods of San Rafael recount his journey to develop a new speech method after losing his larynx to cancer. The talk highlighted the Lost Chord Club for cancer victims.

Red China claims 523 Chiang planes sorties hit mainland

London based report says Red China claims 523 waves of Nationalist planes bombed and strafed the Chinese mainland from Sept 1 to Oct 10, killing 32 inhabitants and wounding 131. It adds that Chiang Kai-shek ships fired 26 sorties in September with over 1200 shells into Amoy Halteng and Tsinkiang, while Red radio says US warships protected the Chiang fleets on several occasions. It also notes 17 Nationalist planes shot down and mentions artillery actions on Quemoy and Little Quemoy.
