Escapees Arrested in LA County After Car Theft Chase

Three Mendocino State Hospital escapees Daniel Contreras Ernest Glover and Roy Burke were arrested in Los Angeles County after a wild La Verne chase. A fourth man Theodore Lane not an escapee was also arrested. Pistols found. car stolen from Sarah Evans in Ukiah. Charges possible in LA or Mendocino counties.

Redwood Valley Man Narrowly Escapes Neck Wound

Walter Milligan of Ava drive Redwood Valley had a narrow escape when a falling acoustic tile cut a deep gash in his neck severing a jugular vein during a construction job at Weatt Humboldt county. An on sight first aid trained man assisted until transport to Sco ia hospital where Dr Coulahan performed surgery and gave blood transfusions. Milligan progresses but faces possible complications and need for extreme care.

Attack Victim Held For Investigation

E Madrigala was found bloody on East Perkins Street at 2 am Sunday and taken by ambulance to the county hospital then to the city jail. Police say he is a stranger with no identification lost in Santa Rosa. Immigation authorities hold him for inquiry. Police accuse two Wilson brothers of the attack. Madrigala offers no motive.

Light Earthquakes Felt In South

Several light earthquakes centered off the Baja California coast were felt in San Diego and Imperial counties yesterday for the second Sunday in a row. Police reported many calls from residents awakened by shaking windows and rattling dishes. Seismologist Fred Robinson logged the first shock at 1:44 a.m. PST with an intensity of four, noting the epicenter distance could not be determined but likely off Baja California.

Adenauer Sees Paris Pact Boosting German Unity

In a cabled interview from Bonn Chancellor Adenauer says the Paris agreement restoring German sovereignty and a German army strengthens the bid to unite East and West Germany. Rockport Redwood Employees vote against union representation

At Rockport Redwood Company in Rounds Sonoma County employees voted 119 to 71 against joining the AFL Sawmill Workers Union. The NLBR conducted the election, ending union influence for now with a possible future vote. A separate CIO Lumber Workers Union election request at Rockport was withdrawn.

Ely Named Northwestern Pacific Agent at Ukiah

N W P announces Ely as Ukiah agent succeeding H P Dohring. E L Ely, with 16 years at the company, moved to Ukiah from Geyserville where he served 10 years as N W P agent. His father serves as Santa Rosa agent with 44 years tenure. The Ely family will stay in Geyserville for now and move after year’s start. Dohring will lead Hopland station upon return from West Indies trip.

Stockmen Point For Third Big Bull Sale Nov 8

The Third Annual Bull Sale by the Redwood Empire Hereford Breeders Association will start at 12:30 p.m. November 8 at the District fairgrounds. Fifty head of registered bulls, bred for range use, will be offered at reasonable prices. Bulls come from Mendocino, Humboldt, Lake, Sonoma and Marin counties and are acclimated to North Coast conditions.

Hit Run Driver Hits Ditch Admit Charge

A hit and run crash at State and Washington streets left one injured and five confined after a red Buick struck the Spencer car, overturning it. Leighe Spencer, cited for DUI, and Wesley Woodard of Apple avenue were among those detained, with Woodard admitting the collision.

Supreme Court Rejects Bee Keeper's Death Appeal

Bee keeper William F. Rupp, sentenced to death in California for murdering a 16 year old baby sitter in 1952, had his appeal denied by the Supreme Court. In separate news, a Eurekap military plane reportedly caught fire and crashed near Kings Peak in Humboldt County, with two men bailing out about 1000 feet above the terrain.

Ukiah Airport Funds Omitted From 1954-55 List

Ukiah area lawmakers denounce the omission of Ukiah from federal airport grants for 1954-55. Coast Logger Dies While Working At Rockport Mill

Jesses Neece, 50, pond foreman at Rockport Redwood Lumber Company, died at 8:20 this morning, evidently from a heart attack, and fell into the pond. Coroner B. G. Broaddus said funeral rites are pending at Cannar Funeral Home in Fort Bragg. Surviving are his wife and a daughter. Neece had worked at the mill about one year.

Move Audition Date Of Cowan Talent Show

The audition for Cowan’s talent show, once set for last Saturday, will now be held Wednesday October 27 from 2 to 6 20 p.m. in the Chevrolet Oldsmobile showroom at 935 North State Street. The big talent show proceeds as scheduled on Thursday Friday and Saturday, Mr Cowan announced today.

Weather Forecast for Northwestern California and Fort Bragg
