Voters in the Ukiah Unified district will decide next Tuesday on a $5.9 million school bond to replace unsafe buildings and fund a new high school and renovations. Absentee ballots must be returned or mailed by deadlines tomorrow and Friday, with 205 requests noted. passage requires a two thirds majority.
Attorneys for Donald McCollum of Yuba City and Brooktrails Resort Improvement District reached a Tuesday settlement in Superior Court. The district will pay McCollum 40000 for work on an earth fill dam project at Brooktrails in Willits in 1969. The case, after waiving a jury, proceeds to the Mendocino County board of supervisors for approval. Judge Tim O'Brien presided.
Charlie Hillard Jr. piloted above left and flipped at the prospect of the National Aerobatic Competition. Pedro del Rio, an assistant bullfighter, fell for the bull heels over head. Notre Dame defensive back Clarence Ellis attempted an unconventional punt block at age 23 amid a chaotic scene.
Covelo 4 H members elected officers for the 1971 72 club year at the high school meeting. Officers include President Suzanne Keller Vice President Teresa Bloom Secretary Chanda Schultz Treasurer Kathy Clarke Reporter Diane Low Song Leader Rebecca Keller and Sergeant at Arms Tim Wilson Installation planned for the next meeting. Also notes on 4 H activities and local sports results.
Councilman Jack Simpson praised the second nine as a major taxpayer saving project. Citizens from all walks of life built the 18 hole layout with 163 volunteers, boosting tourism potential and local economy as Ukiah eyes an All American City bid next year. Buxton lauded the communal effort and Ukiah’s spirit amid the busy council agenda.
Bob Eshleman of Bunkel Roofing reported an early alarm at 7:09 a.m. Wednesday for a structural fire at 408 Grove Street. Ukiah firefighters contained the blaze to the front room and limited damage to moderate smoke and wall scorching. The Inman home sustained no total loss as occupants were away.
