Peoria and San Diego air crashes kill 21
Two separate crashes claim 21 lives. At Greater Peoria Airport a commu ter airliner crashed in rain and fog, killing 16 aboard including the company president. In San Diego, a twin engine Aero Commander crashed after takeoff near Montgomery Field, killing five on board, with four others injured or safe. Names include Morris M. Inhumane Treatment of Pets Charged at Los Angeles Shelters
A former city animal control officer testified at a City Council hearing that cats and dogs were beaten to death with lead pipes and that dog fights were staged after hours at Los Angeles shelters. Trick or Treaters for UNICEF to Visit Ukiah
Ukiah youngsters plan a Halloween charity drive for UNICEF on Sunday October 31. Mrs. John Raffety, area UNICEF chairwoman, says eight local churches and groups including Collegiates DeMolay Jebs Daughters Redwood Valley 4 H and youth and adult clubs will participate. About 150 people have taken part in past years and organizers hope for similar turnout. Collectors will operate from 4 to 10 p.m. using black and orange cartons.

Rousseau oil brings price of 775000 at auction
The Norton-Simon foundation paid a record 775000 for a 1910 Henri Rousseau oil, a 4 by 5 foot jungle scene with monkeys. The sale at Park Bernet galleries was led by Mrs. Robert R. McCormack, widow of a Chicago publisher. A companion Rousseau work is at the Metropolitan Museum.
