Mode O'Day Frock Shop Reorganizes Under New Manager

The Mode O'Day Frock Shop at 329 North School Street is now managed by Mary Van Vliet of Ukiah, succeeding Letha O’Laughtlin. A longtime Ukiah resident, she brings extensive experience in the shop’s line and strong sales expertise. The store, opened about six years ago by Vivian Martin, has occupied the current site except during a remodeling period in the Merk building for State street widening.

Ukiah and Willits to Open Ridgewood Summit Four Lane

Ukiah and Willits plan a 3:30 p.m. dedication on October 31 for the completed Ridgewood Summit four lane freeway. A luncheon at Brooktrails Lodge precedes the event with a CHP escorted caravan to the forestry station. Speakers include Walter Sandelin, with remarks by federal and state highway officials and the Willits High School band for martial music.

Ridgewood invites California highway officials and civic leaders

State officials and engineering staff from Eureka are invited along with legislators from the Redwood Empire and federal representatives. UN Shelves Red Charges of US Aggression

United Nations in New York shelved for at least two weeks a Russian charge that the United States is an aggressor against Red China. Britain’s Selwyn Lloyd to answer questions on disarmament as U S Ambassador Lodge Jr suggested Russia’s charges may mask a Communist invasion plot. The committee postponed 14 days on whether to place the Soviet charges on the agenda, recalling that similar charges in 1950 were defeated in the Security Council and General Assembly.

Ukiah Pine Workers Vote Against Union in 978 Ballot

At Ukiah Pine Lumber Company an NLRB election yielded 7 votes to 0 against unionization with 106 ballots cast by 82 eligible workers. Soviet East Berlin detains senator during tour

In East Berlin East German Communists attempted to detain U S Senator Margaret Chase Smith as she toured the city. Three party members were held for about an hour while CBS reporter Richard Whotteler described activists trying to halt the senator’s car before she was hustled away to safety.

Grand Jury to Decide Today About Petersen

A federal Grand Jury indicted Joseph Sidney Petersen Jr., a former $7700-a-year National Security Agency analyst, on Espionage Act charges alleging he unlawfully took and concealed defense secrets for the Netherlands. He pleaded innocent to all counts. The case cites intent to harm the United States and aid a foreign nation.
