AWOL Navy deserter arraigned after two-vehicle crash

Dewayne Lamance, 23, a confessed Navy deserter, was arraigned in Ukiah Justice Court after a last night arrest. He faces charges of drunk driving hit and run two counts, speeding following too closely driving on the wrong side and no valid license. Lamance's companion James Mobley, 20, of Talmage, was arrested nearby for drunkenness. Police say Lamance admitted consuming tequila before the crash that damaged five vehicles on Spring and Church Streets.

Conley Trial Opens Monday in Mendocino Courthouse

William J. Conley, 34, a Ukiah lumberjack, faces a murder charge for the July 19 rifle slayings of Clifton L. McCool and Ruth Elaine McCool. The trial begins in Department 1 before Superior Court Judge Robert Winslow with Deputy DA Dave Luce prosecuting and Bev Broaddus defending. Conley surrendered near the scene after the shooting and was later handed to authorities by Ukiah firemen. Indicted by the Mendocino County Grand Jury after a special session.

90 Day Term For Theft In Ukiah Woman

Lola Belle Miller of Ukiah was sentenced to 90 days in county jail after conviction on one petty theft count. Judge Fred Goss also imposed three years probation. Miller was arrested by Ukiah police on a complaint by Ken Cross, owner of KFD Discount Store. The theft involved an item of women’s wear.

Nurse aides training course launched in Ukiah

A federally financed nurse aide training course begins Oct 12 in Ukiah at Hillside Community Hospital and Ukiah General Hospital. Two hours of classroom work and four hours daily of lab, five days a week, total 150 hours over five weeks. Applicants 18 or older with eighth grade education and good health may apply at the Department of Employment, 208 Mason Street.

Woodland Driver Begins Five Day Drunk Driving Sentence

Charles Sanford Roller of Woodland turned himself in to the sheriff yesterday to begin serving a five day mandatory term after a second drunken driving conviction. Roller was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in the Laytonville area.

Sailor Describes Tonkin Gulf Action in Letter

Iowa sailor Fireman James J. Kress wrote to his mother about a September Tonkin Gulf incident involving U S destroyers and torpedo boats from the mainland. The Navy confirmed parts of his account, noting radar contacts, gunfire, and battle stations aboard the USS Edwards during a tense 8 PM to 1 AM patrol.

California funds aid Sonoma Napa fire damages

U S Senator Pierre Salinger announced that the Department of Agriculture allocated 299000 dollars in emergency conservation assistance to repair damage from forest fires last month in Sonoma and Napa Counties. The funds will restore vegetation cover woodlands range fences and livestock water facilities and will be paid to the California Stabilization and Conservation Committee to share costs with farmers for emergency restoration.
