Strike Ends For GM At National Level But Local Issues Persist

The United Auto Workers and General Motors announced a national contract covering nearly 350,000 GM workers, but the union will continue the strike at 130 U.S. plants until local demands are settled and the agreement is ratified. Local problems remain priority as bargaining shifts to plant specific issues across 117 sites.

Humphrey Attacks Goldwater in Berkeley Speech

UPI reports Sen Hubert H Humphrey assailed GOP nominee Barry Goldwater on foreign policy and U.N. issues in a Berkeley California address. He urged bipartisan support for United Nations leadership and criticized isolationist views as dangerous. He planned to fly to Cheyenne and Omaha after the speech.

Mendocino County campaign committee to elect U S Senator Pierre Salinger announced five chairmanships. Judge Ware of Fort Bragg and Mrs. Ted Eriksen Jr of Ukiah named W L Webb Brown as finance chairman and Mrs. Bruce Bearden as publicity and women’s chairman. Also named were Charles Barra Redwood Valley farmers for Salinger Merle Orchard Ukiah attorneys for Salinger and Audrey Hollenbeck Ukiah educators for Salinger.

Surf Fisherman Drowns Off Cloone Beach

Herman Albert Wurm, 68, of Marysville, drowned while surf fishing at Cloone Beach on Saturday afternoon. He was with relatives when a wave swept him out to sea. his body was recovered and returned to shore. Survived by his widow Cecilia Ada Wurm and a stepson. Funeral services pending at Cain's Funeral Home in Fort Bragg.

Two Injured In Accident Near Caspar

Virginia Swift and Richard Dugan, both of Willits, suffered minor injuries when their car went off Highway 1 south of Caspar on the Mendocino Coast. The driver was speeding for conditions and the vehicle rolled down a hillside before being taken to Redwood Coast Hospital.

Germans Escape Via Tunnel

West Berlin officials report 57 East Germans fled to West Berlin through a tunnel under the border. Eastern guards fired repeatedly when the tunnel was found, killing one border guard. Refugees, 23 men 31 women 3 children, moved in small groups from Saturday through Monday into the French sector in Wedding district. discovery occurred around 12:30 a.m. with four border guards and three secret policemen involved.

Tornadoes and Floods Strike Dixie in Hilda's Wake

Severe storms from Hurricane Hilda lash Dixie states causing tornadoes from Louisiana to North Carolina. At least 38 dead, 200 injured, thousands homeless, and property damage in the millions. In Louisiana, three twisters near Larose produced substantial fatalities. A rescue line worker, Donald Satcher, 22, died while repairing downed lines in Ruston. Power crews labored to restore service across the region.

Reagan Speaks Tuesday for Sen Goldwater

Ronald Reagan, Hollywood actor and political activist, will appear in Ukiah tomorrow for a noon luncheon at the Home Arts building Fairgrounds.
