Lightning Sparks 27 Fires Across Mendocino County
A Thursday night storm set 27 fires in Mendocino County primarily around Covelo with some near Willits and Laytonville. The California Division of Forestry deployed 100 personnel, two engines, three tankers, 11 conservation crews, and four helicopters to fight the blazes. Heavy rain, gusty winds, and hail were forecast for the Bay Area and Humboldt County, with flood watches in Sonoma, Napa, Solano, and several counties including San Francisco. Pacific Telephone and PG&E reported isolated outages in Lake and Mendocino Counties.

Mendocino County offices in Ukiah will switch to a CENTREX II telephone system on October 11 1976 adding 468 as the new prefix and linking about 240 county lines. The upgrade eliminates the central switchboard, enables direct calls between officials and residents, and supports three way calls with minimal operator involvement. A county directory with new numbers will appear that week. A public hearing on Potter Valley zoning is set for October 5.

Ukiah Trucker Dies After Trailer Braking Fire East of Garberville
Ukiah man Michael Burrell, 34, owner of Burrell Trucking, was killed when brakes on a trailer wheel caught fire east of Garberville on Alderpoint Road. The rig overturned after the trailer braking system failed, trapping him as the cab left the road. He died at Garberville Medical Center. He is survived by wife Judi and two children.

California approves first of its kind right to die bill
California Gov. Edmund G. Brown signed AB3060 to let terminally ill adults sign a living will directing doctors to withdraw life support if no purpose remains. Lake County tow crash kills Romine, injures Texas youth
Eldon William Romine, 27, was dead on arrival at a Lake County hospital after a tow chain failure caused a vehicle to lose brakes and overturn on Siegler Canyon Road.
