Nearly 100 riders and youths took part in the Ukiah Jaycees bicycle safety road-e-o at the Yokayo shopping center lot. The event, run with Ukiah police and California Highway Patrol, featured a 12 point safety check, 50 point written test, and 60 point riding course for a possible 122 total. Tom Stone, 11, led with 118 points and won his 11-12 age group. Prizes from McDonald’s Yokayo Bowl Ukiah Theater Zack’s Foster’s Freeze and A and W Root Beer were awarded. results listed by age group.

Plunge fatal to young LP forester in California
William J. Birt a 25 year old forester for Louisiana Pacific died after his four wheel drive pickup plunged from a private road near Van Arsdale into a river. Rescuers including San Hedron Logging volunteers worked to freeing him. He died at Ukiah General Hospital despite aid. He had recently moved to Ukiah and held a UC Berkeley forestry degree. TelePrompter maintenance men labored after a transformer burned out atop Mt. Hedran during a storm. The standby generator failed Sunday afternoon, cutting channels 2 4 5 9 and 11. Tony Ashcraft Pat Rowan and Craig Chesboro repaired the system, restoring service at 6 30 p.m. The damaged transformer will be replaced that evening if no complications arise.
