The Television Improvement Association ordered a complete transmitter shutdown to push the 1964 65 operating budget goal of 18000. Directors expect to raise the remaining 1438 in memberships within 24 48 hours and restore service by Friday.
Gregory Johnson a 19 year old from Palo Alto was arraigned in Ukiah Justice Court on possession charges and held on 5000 bail. He was questioned about marijuana found on a Mendocino ranch after a tip from Palo Alto police. No hold was placed on him and authorities say he fled a net targeting a Woodside girl who ran a marijuana business. Deputies found he received about 20 dollars. No marijuana was grown or passed in Mendocino County during the broad drug traffic program linked to the Woodside case.
London district line incident results in 2,500 dollars in fines and court costs after a four hour check that trapped 95 people between Barons Court and Wimbledon on September 22.
A Hopland man and woman were arrested on suspicion of forgery after checks used in a scheme to defraud Ukiah area businesses. The trio, including the man’s 17 year old wife, were taken into custody with Santa Rosa authorities and returned to Ukiah. The forged checks totaled around 179 dollars, with the suspects using the truck driver Robert L. Ferguson’s name. The case continues as investigators pursue the involved stores and individuals.
Washington Defense Secretary McNamara announced a plan to close 95 bases and facilities including shipyards to save about 500 million dollars yearly and cut 63,000 jobs. Closures span 18 months with offers for new positions. 377,000 acres of land will be released for non defense use. Some bases are in five foreign countries. The diplomats, Abdel Moneim el Nelhway and Selim Osman el Sayed, were declared persona non grata and ordered to leave Italy by nightfall amid protests to the United Arab Republic.
Rebel leader Christopher Gbenye is reported to have met U.S. Consul Michael Hoyt in Leopoldville to discuss the safety of American prisoners, including Dr. Paul Carlson who faces a rebel death sentence. The U.S. warned Gbenye and other rebels they will be held responsible for any harm to Carlson and 62 other Americans.
The United States and the Soviet Union signed a two year agreement to use atomic energy to desalinate sea water and develop economical methods to produce fresh water from oceans. The pact covers cooperation and data exchange and was described by U S Ambassador Foy Kohler as symbolizing progress in normal relations.
Washington reports a U S Air Force F100 Super Sabre was shot down over central Laos around midnight while escorting an RF101 Voodoo on a reconnaissance mission. Defense Secretary McNamara said rescuers are seeking the pilot as missions over Laos continue to gather information on North Vietnamese troop movements in violation of the 1962 Geneva accords.
A cafe at Tan Son Nhut Airport in Saigon was struck by a Communist terrorist bomb during a major heliborne operation. Eighteen U S servicemen and two Vietnamese were injured, ten Americans hospitalized along with the concessionaire. The blast damaged the snack bar near the airfield as the attack unfolded.
