Weekend traffic mishaps leave CHP busy in Mendocino County

Four injury crashes under CHP investigation over Memorial Day weekend in Mendocino County. Notable event a rear end collision on Highway 101 near Ridgewood Ranch injuring multiple and leading to arrest of Larry Buzzard for felony drunk driving and speeding. Also a fatal 200 foot fall north of Fort Bragg involving Gloria Hawley and others.

Eight POWs accused of misconduct by fellow former prisoners

In Washington Air Force Col Theodore W Guy a POW for five years accuses eight former fellow POWs all enlisted men of misconduct in a Hanoi camp known as The Plantation The charges cover alleged exchanges of information extra rations and greater freedom of movement Some POWs reportedly discussed bringing charges against additional prisoners including officers and enlisted men Pentagon spokesman Jerry Friedheim said a few ex POWs talked to legal officers about further actions.

Willow Water District Sees Unprecedented Water Rush

Harold Ross, Willow Water District manager, reports a Monday raid on water supplies. Overloaded switches at Norgard Lane caused a two to three hour outage for higher level homes. Two storage tanks of 200000 and 100000 gallons drained as 1.75 to 2.25 million gallons were pumped yesterday, far above the 700000 gallons used four days earlier. Willow Water serves 680 users.

Rain delays again halt Indianapolis 500 start

In Indianapolis 32 cars finally run a parade lap after a long delay caused by a wet south straightaway. The field, already delayed over an hour, is stopped again before the pace lap can finish.

Traffic death toll climbs during Memorial Day weekend

United Press International reports the Memorial day weekend traffic death count neared 500 with NSC estimates suggesting up to 650. The UPI tally shows 503 traffic deaths since Friday 6 p.m. EDT, with California 53 New York 35 Texas 30 Florida 29 Ohio 24 and other breakdowns.

Weather report for Northwestern California shows fair conditions through Wednesday with patches of low clouds and fog along the coast. Cooler on Wednesday with Fort Bragg forecast low 48 high 62 and Ukiah low 56.

Three drownings over Memorial Day weekend at Clear Lake

LAKEPORT three drownings mar the holiday period. Five year old Frank Pascua of Daly City disappeared from a pontoon near Austin Beach and was found in 12 feet of water. Two visitors from Compton Tyson Weaton and Jimmy Holmes died when their boat struck a rock and sank off Silverado Beach. Relatives and rescuers recovered the bodies by 5 p.m. with two survivors named Ernest and Herbert Holmes. Bodies were sent to Jones and Lewis Mortuary in Lower Lake.

Judge grants Sheppard immunity to testify in Watergate case

Federal Judge John Sirica ordered immunity for Roy M. Sheppard to compel Senate testimony on Watergate documents from the White House the day after the break in.
