Carew Surges With Twin Homers Under Billy Martin
Rod Carew of the Minnesota Twins homered twice in a 7 1 victory over the Washington Senators, marking the first two-homer game of his career. The 23-year-old Gatun Panama native extended his batting pace to .394, aided by a belief not to chase every pitch, and helped lift Minnesota to a two-game AL West lead over Oakland. Carew credited playing for manager Billy Martin for his improved focus, while also making a key defensive play in the second inning to spark a double play. Jim Perry allowed nine hits but earned his fourth win with support from four double plays.
