Ukiah Golf Team Clinches NBL I Championship Title

Ukiah High School clinched the Northern Bay League I golf title after a 105 victory over Napa, finishing 12-1-1 on the season. Senior Jim Bassler led wins, with nine, while standout Jakovic matched nine wins and a 67 in the championship against Mark Lye of Napa. Verle Steppe and Jim Strong contributed key rounds as the team earned a second straight NBL I crown and earned a chance to test against top Northern California squads.

Surprising rook Peraza fuels Astros win and slugger rallies

United Press reports a wild night as Luis Peraza, a two year rookie, sparked a late rally for the Houston Astros in a 62 victory. Don Wilson pitched a six hitter for his 54th win. the Astros improved after a rough start to the season. In other NL games San Francisco edged Chicago 5-4 while Atlanta topped St Louis 5-3. In the AL, Chicago, New York and Baltimore posted wins as Detroit and Cleveland were defeated. Giants benefited from Cubs bullpen mistakes to beat the Cubs, and Dodgers defeated Montreal behind Haller and Parker homers.

Harris Dominates Warren In Valley Theater Bout

Lonnie Harris 157 pounds uses repeated left jabs to control Willie Sweetwater Warren 156 in a 10 round middleweight main event at Valley Music Theater Woodland Hills California. Harris wins a unanimous decision as Warren makes a late comeback but falls short. Joe Cokes 163 of Dallas defeats Henry Walker 159 of Los Angeles by unanimous decision in the same card.

Faculty Guil din softball contests here

The Ukiahi Faculty softball team needed two unearned runs to edge Pearson's Chevrons 3 1 in a Tuesday night win. Guild Wine, co defending champion, followed with a late inning burst to defeat Masonite as leadoff hitters and errors fueled the rally. Pave Goodwin tossed a three hitter and remained unscored on after the first inning, while Ray Whittaker Walt Hayden Doug Day and five others contributed to a five hit Faculty attack. The Faculty meet Masonite tonight at Giorno Park after the North State Braves face the Lakeport Athletics at 6 30 p.m.

Majestic Prince Shines in Five Furlong Workout

UPI reports Majestic Prince, Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, breezed five furlongs in 88 2/5 seconds as trainer Johnny Longden prepared him for the Belmont Stakes the third leg of the Triple Crown. Owner Frank McMahon watched. next major workout expected early next week at 1 1/16 miles. The Belmont is set for June 7. Majestic Prince has won all nine of his starts.

Anderson and Quarry win bouts in Oakland showdowns

Ray Anderson of Minneapolis scored a decisive 10 round unanimous decision over Frank Niblett of Los Angeles. Anderson improved to 22-1 with 1 no contest, while Niblett fell to 14-32-11. Mike Quarry, 18, of Anaheim, stopped Ernie Gipson in the fifth round of an eight round bout.
