Podgorny ousted from Soviet politburo amid retirement speculation

In Moscow the Soviet Communist Party Central Committee dismissed Nikolai Podgorny from the 15 member politburo in a surprise move with no explanation. Observers see retirement as the likely motive for the 74 year old head of state. The action was disclosed by Moscow radio after a closed Kremlin meeting.

Ukiahi Band Leads Victoria Days Parade Contest

Ukiah high school Ukiahi marching band reportedly won the over 1000 student division at the Victoria Days Parade in Victoria British Columbia with Mira Monte of Orinda second and Shoreline of Seattle third. Final official results were not published though sources indicated Ukiahi would receive the trophy. Thirty seven bands competed and Ukiahi performed a rain shortened show after concerts near Parliament.

Planners to Consider Four story Building in Ukiah

The city planning commission will discuss a four story office building proposal in downtown Ukiah tomorrow at 8 p.m. in council chambers. Wagner Construction plans the high rise on the northeast corner of Oak and Perkins Streets. The structure is slated to be built and reviewed by the commission.

Marsh back in practice as license suspension stays under appeal

Dr. Paul Marsh resumes treatment while the State Court of Appeals in San Francisco grants a temporary stay on the April 27 license suspension by the State Board of Medical Quality Assurance. The stay lasts pending further consideration of the board's appeal following a February two week hearing.

Fort Bragg bridge destroyed on Skunk line

A fire discovered at 7 am destroyed a long wooden double-A-frame bridge on the Skunk train route four and a half miles east of Fort Bragg. Built in the 1930s, the 269 foot structure was one of the longest on the line and firefighting teams approached on foot due to inaccessibility.

California budget surplus may vanish with rising spending

Legislative Analyst A Alan Post warns that a $2.75 billion May surplus under Brown plans could evaporate as property tax relief and school financing add $1.0 billion in new spending. Finance Director Roy Bell sees growth and no near term tax hikes, but warns funds may tighten by 1980 if bills pass.

Mendocino Supervisors Approve 20 Geothermal Test Holes

Phillips Petroleum wins preliminary approval to drill 20 temperature gradient test holes on Masonite property between Ukiah and the coast. Residents from the Philo Navarro area oppose large scale geothermal development citing potential noise air pollution and gas by products while the board finds no public controversy and adopts a negative declaration.

Loggers arrive in D C to protest park plan

A caravan of 23 California logging trucks arrived in Washington to oppose a proposed 48 000 acre expansion of Redwood National Park to protect ancient redwoods. The group plans a Capitol rally and White House lawn meeting while debates over job losses and alternative work continue.
