Yucca Flat, Nev. A nuclear weapon detonated 1,850 feet underground in a cavern beneath the desert at 10 am PDT. The ERDA reported no radiation detected and said the explosion went as expected, barely drawing attention in Las Vegas 70 miles away.
In Seoul, President Park Chung-hee sought guarantees as the United States pledged that withdrawing 33,000 U S ground troops in four to five years will not threaten Korean security. Gen George Brown and Philip Habib met with Korean officials to discuss safeguards and peace measures.
A four alarm blaze gutted the Everard Baths in midtown Manhattan, a rooming house and sauna favored by homosexuals. Eight people were killed and 10 injured, three critically, as more than 100 firefighters fought the four story building and forced many tenants from their cubicles.
The board voted 5-0 to grant a use permit for twenty 250 foot geothermal test holes on Masonite property to Phillips Petroleum after a last minute amendment. The measure requires a one year report on Ita findings from the test hole exploration.
PG&E urged its large commercial and industrial customers in Northern and Central California to prepare voluntary energy reduction plans for short notice cuts this summer. Letters were sent to city and county governments and about 4000 large customers, asking them to review an Energy Conservation Checklist and Emergency Load Reduction Plan and return them to determine curtailment potential.
Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, fired by President Carter over Korea, told a House committee that withdrawing U.S. ground forces would end in disaster and risk a new Korean war. He argued the North Korean military balance favors the North and that pulling the 2nd Division would worsen it. Defense leaders say withdrawal could proceed with air, logistics support and stronger Korean forces.
Washington reports say President Carter and Crown Prince Fahd pledged Saudi Arabia will not impose an oil embargo to leverage a Middle East settlement. Fahd said oil would not be used as a weapon and both leaders discussed future oil prices and Middle East security. Fahd also backed a Palestinian homeland as the cornerstone of peace.
Warren Chapman of Noyo to be retried after Superior Judge Rex Slater of Sonoma County ruled Tuesday that the murder conviction in the July 10, 1975, shooting of Bob Parducci must be reheard. Chapman, 52, was previously convicted of second degree murder and had been serving a prison term when an appeals court found instructional errors. He will appear Friday for setting a new trial date before Judge A. B. Broaddus. tension and disputed testimony surrounded the case, including conflicting statements from journalist George Hunter and defense attorney Leo Cook.
A Dutch justice official said four South Moluccans imprisoned after past attacks were brought to Assen near a school and train holding about 165 hostages. With the hostage deadline passed and no incident, the government reports intensive talks as potential negotiations begin. The gunmen demand 21 jailed terrorists and a getaway aircraft, and 105 schoolchildren remain at Bovensmilde primary school under threat.
