Labor Department limits ILGWU illegal loans deal cited

The Labor Department avoided criminal action over illegal loans by ILGWU officers and staff totaling mortgage and personal loans up to $2,000 each. A series of secret agreements reduced loans to legal levels by set deadlines, with no prosecutions. Critics say the softness reflects old ties and the union's progressive reputation under Dubinsky.

Principal aims of state fairs and local support

The report by the so called little Hoover Commission identifies three main purposes of fairs as community activity and education, support for 4-H and future farmer youth programs, and local economic activity. It notes broad resistance to consolidating or eliminating local fairs and proposes expanding industrial vocational arts exhibitions to raise revenue and broaden youth programs. A pilot plan by the joint committee seeks cooperation among the Division of Fairs and Exhibitions and vocational education to test five demonstration activities. The author notes urban legislators back the resolution.
