Judge dismisses DES cancer suit by 144 women in Michigan

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Roumell ruled the 144 women could not sue generically for DES linked cancers. The judge said the plaintiffs failed to name specific products or manufacturers and could not sue all drug makers without identifying the sources. The women planned to appeal the ruling.

Yugoslav Controller Jailed Over Deadly Collision

Gradimir Tasic, 28, received seven years for negligence in the worst in flight collision in history. Seven co-defendants were acquitted of responsibility for the Sept choices over Vrbovec near Zagreb, involving a British Airways Trident 3 and an Inex Adria DC-9 killing 176 aboard both jets.

Briggs kicks off 1978 California governor bid as conservative

Dr Myers found guilty in Mendocino drugs case

Little Lake Justice Court jury convicts Dr. Fred Myers on eight counts accusing him of prescribing amphetamines and barbiturates without justifiable need. Sentencing set for June 3 at 2 p.m. The trial began May 4. reconvened May 11 after a juror illness.

California Assembly Passes Death Penalty Bill Amid Debate

In Sacramento the Assembly approved SB155 by a razor thin 54 to 23 vote sending the measure toward Gov. Brown who is expected to veto. Freshman Henry Mello switched from opposed to aye to secure passage amid staunch opposition from lawmakers including Cline and Keene. The Senate earlier passed it 29 to 10, with constitutional questions lingering after a 1973 strike down.

Ukiah Attorney Intervenes in SEIU Suit Over County Jobs

Pano Stephens representing Mendocino County Employees Association wins permission to intervene in a SEIU suit filed April 27 by the Napa based union against the Mendocino County board of supervisors. The case seeks to change the classification of 150 social services employees and to compel an election to choose a bargaining agent. The suit contends the board did not follow personnel policies. Stephens seeks 25 000 dollars in punitive damages and general damages later.
